Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The disclosed techniques allow for externalizing errors from an implantable medical device using the device's charging coil, for receipt at an external charger or other external device. Transmission of errors in this manner is particularly useful when telemetry of error codes through a traditional telemetry coil in the implant is not possible, for example, because the error experienced is so fundamental as to preclude use of such traditional means. By externalizing the error via the charging coil, and though the use of robust error modulation circuitry in the implant designed to be generally insensitive to fundamental errors, the external charger can be consulted to understand the failure mode involved, and to take appropriate action.

What is claimed is: 1. An implantable medical device, comprising: a charging coil configured to receive power from an external charger; and error modulator circuitry configured to determine a plurality of errors present in the implantable medical device, and configured to transmit indications of the determined errors from the charging coil to the external charger, wherein each indication is transmitted at one of a plurality of frequencies, wherein each frequency indicates a particular one of the plurality of errors. 2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a telemetry antenna configured to receive and transmit data from and to an external controller. 3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the implantable medical device further comprises error code circuitry configured to transmit the indications of the determined errors from the telemetry antenna to the external controller. 4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to disable the telemetry antenna when the error modulator circuitry is transmitting the indications of the determined errors. 5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a microcontroller, and wherein the error modulator circuitry does not receive any signals from the microcontroller. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to receive a task indicator indicative of a task being performed by the implantable medical device. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to receive error indicators indicative of the plurality of errors in the implantable medical device. 8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to modulate an impedance of the charging coil. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to transmit the indications of the determined errors continually from the charging coil. 10. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of errors comprises an error relating to initialization of the implantable medical device. 11. A system, comprising: an implantable medical device; an external controller configured to transmit and receive data to and from the implantable medical device; and an external charger configured to transmit power to the implantable medical device, wherein the implantable medical device comprises a telemetry antenna configured to receive and transmit the data from and to the external controller, a charging coil configured to receive the power from the external charger, and error modulator circuitry configured to determine a plurality of errors present in the implantable medical device, and configured to transmit indications of the determined errors from the charging coil to the external charger, wherein each indication is transmitted at one of a plurality of frequencies, wherein each frequency indicates a particular one of the plurality of errors. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the external charger further comprises a user interface configured to indicate the determined error to a person. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the user interface includes a screen. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the external charger is configured to receive the indications of the determined errors only when transmitting power to the implantable medical device. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the external charger receives the indications of the determined errors as reflections of the transmitted power. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the error modulator circuitry is configured to transmit the indications of the determined errors continually from the charging coil. 17. The system of claim 11 , at least one of the plurality of errors comprises an error relating to initialization of the implantable medical device. 18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the implantable medical device comprises an implantable stimulator device.
