The invention provides a method to prevent or treat HIV-infection with synthetic tannins, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising synthetic tannins.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for treating HIV infection comprising administering to a subject afflicted with HIV infection an anti-HIV amount of a compound of formula (III): wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are individually H, (C 1 -C 4 )alkyl or galloyl (G), wherein at least one of R 1 , R 2 or R 3 is G. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein R 1 and/or R 3 are G. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein R 2 is H.
