We claim: 1. A purified compound of formula (I), (III), (IV), (V), or (VIII): wherein R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt; P 1 and P 2 are each, individually, a hydrogen atom or a protecting group and * indicates bonds are, independently, in the R or S configuration. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein when P 1 and P 2 are both hydrogen atoms, then R is other than a hydrogen atom. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein P 1 and P 2 are each hydrogen atoms and R is a hydrogen atom. 4. A composition comprising a compound of claim 1 , and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 5. A method to treat airway inflammation comprising administration of a therapeutically acceptable amount of a compound of claim 1 . 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein P 1 and P 2 are each hydrogen atoms and R is a hydrogen atom. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein said airway inflammation is asthma. 8. The method of claim 5 , wherein when P 1 and P 2 are both hydrogen atoms, then R is other than a hydrogen atom. 9. A method to treat airway inflammation comprising administration of a therapeutically acceptable amount of a composition of claim 4 . 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein P 1 and P 2 are each hydrogen atoms and R is a hydrogen atom. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein said airway inflammation is asthma. 12. The method of claim 5 , wherein P 1 and P 2 are each hydrogen atoms and R is a hydrogen atom. 13. The method of claim 5 , wherein said airway inflammation is asthma.
