Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An intraocular lens inserting instrument ( 1 ) capable of folding a lens ( 2 ) and pressing it by a plunger ( 4 ) to discharge it into an eye and capable of taking out the folded lens ( 2 ) by tweezers ( 15 ). The intraocular lens inserting instrument ( 1 ) for inserting a foldable intraocular lens ( 2 ) into an eye has a tubular body ( 3 ) for allowing the intraocular lens ( 2 ) to pass through it and introducing it into the eye, and a plunger ( 4 ) for pressing the intraocular lens ( 2 ) to discharge it into the eye, wherein the intraocular lens ( 2 ) is folded by a folding member ( 8 ) provided at a lens placing section ( 5 ). The lens placing section ( 5 ) has an open/close lid ( 12 ) so that the folded intraocular lens ( 2 ) can be held by the tweezers ( 15 ).

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A method, comprising the steps of: storing an unfolded intraocular lens entirely within an assembled intraocular lens inserter that includes a tubular body with a nozzle which defines a longitudinal axis, a plunger that is movable through the tubular body to the nozzle and is located on the longitudinal axis, and a lens folding device that folds the intraocular lens when moved from a first position to a second position; preventing the plunger from moving into contact with the unfolded intraocular lens when the lens folding device is in the first position; and allowing the plunger to move into contact with the intraocular lens as a result of movement of the lens folding device from the first position to the second position. 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of preventing the plunger from moving into contact with the unfolded intraocular lens comprises preventing the plunger from moving into contact with the unfolded intraocular lens with a blocking portion of the lens folding device when the lens folding device is in the first position. 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the step of allowing the plunger to move into contact with the intraocular lens comprises moving the blocking portion, thereby allowing the plunger to move into contact with the intraocular lens, as the lens folding device moves from the first position to the second position. 4. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the intraocular lens inserter includes a lens placement section within the tubular body; and the step of storing the unfolded intraocular lens comprises storing the unfolded intraocular lens in the lens placement section. 5. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the intraocular lens inserter includes a lens placement section within the tubular body that is offset from the longitudinal axis; and the step of storing the unfolded intraocular lens comprises storing the unfolded intraocular lens in the lens placement section such that the unfolded intraocular lens is offset from the longitudinal axis. 6. A method as claimed in claim 5 , further comprising the step of: folding the intraocular lens by moving the lens folding device from the first position to the second position such that a portion of the folded intraocular lens is aligned with the longitudinal axis. 7. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of: moving the folded intraocular lens through the nozzle with the plunger. 8. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of: folding the intraocular lens by moving the lens folding device in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis from the first position to the second position. 9. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of: folding the intraocular lens by pivoting the lens folding device from the first position to the second position. 10. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of: preventing the lens folding device from moving from a first position to a second position with a removable apparatus to which the intraocular lens inserter is secured. 11. A method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein removable apparatus comprises a cover. 12. A method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein removable apparatus comprises a nozzle cap. 13. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of: allowing removal of the folded intraocular lens from the intraocular lens inserter. 14. A method of operating an intraocular lens inserter that includes a tubular body with a nozzle, an intraocular lens stored within the tubular body, a lens folding device that is in a first position and is movable relative to the tubular body from the first position to a second position, and a plunger that is prevented from moving toward the nozzle when the lens folding device is in the first position, the method comprising the steps of: simultaneously folding the intraocular lens and causing movement of the plunger to be permitted as a result of moving the lens folding device from the first position to the second position; and after the lens folding device has been moved from the first position to the second position, pushing the plunger into contact with the intraocular lens. 15. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the lens folding device includes a blocking portion; and causing movement of the plunger to be permitted comprises moving the blocking portion. 16. A method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising the step of: moving the folded intraocular lens through the nozzle with the plunger. 17. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the tubular body defines a longitudinal axis; and moving the lens folding device from the first position to the second position comprises moving the lens folding device in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis from the first position to the second position. 18. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein moving the lens folding device from the first position to the second position comprises pivoting the lens folding device from the first position to the second position. 19. A method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising the step of: preventing the lens folding device from moving from a first position to a second position with a removable apparatus to which the intraocular lens inserter is secured. 20. A method as claimed in claim 19 , wherein removable apparatus comprises a cover. 21. A method as claimed in claim 19 , wherein removable apparatus comprises a nozzle cap.
