An applicator instrument for dispensing surgical fasteners includes a housing, a firing system disposed in the housing, an actuator coupled with the housing for actuating the firing system, an elongated shaft extending from the housing, the elongated shaft having an outer diameter, and a cap secured to the distal end of the elongated shaft, whereby the cap has a lower distal edge that extends laterally beyond the outer diameter of the elongated shaft. The lower distal edge of the cap has a length that is greater than the outer diameter of the elongated shaft. The cap has a distal end face that slopes upwardly and proximally from the lower distal edge, and the cap has a surgical fastener delivery window formed in the distal end face for dispensing surgical fasteners. The delivery window has a lower end that is spaced from the lower distal edge.

What is claimed is: 1. An applicator instrument for dispensing surgical fasteners comprising: a housing; a firing system disposed in said housing; an actuator coupled with said housing for actuating said firing system; an elongated shaft extending from said housing, said elongated shaft having an outer diameter; a cap having a proximal end secured to a distal end of said elongated shaft, wherein said cap has a lower distal edge that extends laterally beyond the outer diameter of said elongated shaft, wherein said proximal end of said cap has an outer diameter and said lower distal edge of said cap has a length that is greater than the outer diameter of said proximal end of said cap so that a bottom surface of said cap tapers outwardly from said proximal end of said cap to said lower distal edge of said cap; said cap having a distal end face on an outer surface of said cap that slopes upwardly and proximally from said lower distal edge to an upper end of said cap, said cap including a surgical fastener delivery window formed in said sloping distal end face for dispensing surgical fasteners, wherein said surgical fastener delivery window has a lower end, an upper end, and opposing sides that extend from said lower end to said upper end of said delivery window, wherein said lower end of said delivery window is spaced from said lower distal edge, and wherein said sloping distal end face defines a continuous sloping surface that surrounds said surgical fastener delivery window so that said sloping distal end face extends between said lower distal edge and said lower end of said delivery window, around said opposing sides of said delivery window, and between said upper end of said delivery window and said upper end of said cap. 2. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said lower distal edge of said cap comprises a center section that spans the outer diameter at the distal end of said elongated shaft and first and second extensions that extend laterally from the center section and beyond the outer diameter of said elongated shaft, and wherein the center section defines a straight section of said lower distal edge and said first and second extensions define curved sections of said lower distal edge that extend proximally from said center section. 3. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said sloping distal end face extends continuously between said lower distal edge and said upper end of said cap. 4. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 3 , wherein said lower distal edge of said cap has a thickness extending between the bottom surface of said cap and the lower end of said surgical fastener delivery window. 5. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said lower distal edge comprises a center section that spans the outer diameter at the distal end of said elongated shaft and first and second extensions that extend laterally from the center section and beyond the outer diameter of said elongated shaft. 6. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said first and second lateral extensions have convexly curved bottom surfaces that extend laterally from the bottom surface of said cap. 7. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the proximal end of said cap has an outer diameter that matches and conforms to the outer diameter of said elongated shaft. 8. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said housing defines a bottom of said applicator instrument, said applicator instrument further comprising: a handle extending upwardly from said housing and being angled toward the distal end of said elongated shaft, said handle having an upper end that defines a top of said applicator instrument; said elongated shaft having a proximal section that extends along a first axis and a distal section that is oriented at an angle relative to the proximal section for extending upwardly toward the top of said applicator instrument. 9. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 8 , wherein said elongated shaft has a curve located between the proximal shaft section and the distal shaft section. 10. The applicator instrument as claimed in claim 8 , wherein said firing system disposed in said housing is moveable in distal and proximal directions along the first axis, said firing system including a firing rod disposed within said elongated shaft, wherein actuation of said firing system drives a distal end of said firing rod through said surgical fastener delivery window and distally beyond said sloping distal end face of said cap, and wherein said handle extends along a second axis that defines an acute angle with the first axis. 11. An applicator instrument for dispensing surgical fasteners comprising: a housing defining a bottom of said applicator instrument; a firing system disposed in said housing and being moveable in distal and proximal directions along a first axis; a handle extending upwardly from said housing along a second axis that defines an acute angle with said first axis, said handle having an upper end that defines a top of said applicator instrument; a trigger mounted on said handle for actuating said firing system; an elongated shaft extending from said housing, said elongated shaft having a proximal section that extends along the first axis and a distal section that is oriented at an angle relative to the proximal section for extending upwardly toward the top of said applicator instrument; a cap having a proximal end secured to a distal end of said elongated shaft, wherein said cap has a lower distal edge that extends laterally beyond an outer diameter of said elongated shaft, wherein said proximal end of said cap has an outer diameter and said lower distal edge of said cap has a length that is greater than the outer diameter of said proximal end of said cap so that a bottom surface of said cap tapers outwardly from said proximal end of said cap to said lower distal edge of said cap, and wherein said cap has a distal end face on an outer surface of said cap that slopes upwardly and proximally from said lower distal edge to an upper end of said cap; said cap including a surgical fastener delivery window formed in said sloping distal end face for dispensing surgical fasteners, wherein said surgical fastener delivery window has a lower end, an upper end, and opposing sides that extend from said lower end to said upper end of said delivery window, wherein said lower end of said delivery window is spaced from said lower distal edge, and wherein said sloping distal end face defines a continuous sloping surface that surrounds said surgical fastener delivery window so that said sloping distal end face extends between said lower distal edge and said lower end of said delivery window, around said opposing sides of said delivery window, and between said upper end of said delivery window and said upper end of said cap. 12.
