Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A strobe device that operates in multiple modes is disclosed. The strobe device may include an LED-based strobe element and a controller. In response to receiving a command to generate an output, the controller determines in which of at least a first mode and second mode to operate, and sends one or more signals to the LED-based strobe element based on the determination. The first mode and the second mode may differ from one another in at least one aspect, such as duration, luminosity, current supplied to LED, or wavelength range. The controller may select both of the first mode and the second mode (such as alternating between the first mode and the second mode). Or, the controller may select one of the first mode and the second mode. For example, depending on the ambient light at or near the strobe device, the controller may select either the first mode or the second mode.

The invention claimed is: 1. A strobe notification device for use in an alarm system, the strobe notification device comprising: a communication interface; a strobe element; and a controller in communication with the communication interface and the strobe element, the controller configured to control the strobe element to operate in a first mode or to operate in two different operating modes, the two different operating modes comprising the first mode and a second mode, wherein the first mode and the second mode both have non-zero luminosity, wherein the first mode has at least one aspect of operation different from the second mode, the controller further configured to: receive, via the communication interface, a command to activate the strobe element; and in response to receiving the command, send at least one signal in order for the strobe element to operate in the first mode and thereafter the second mode. 2. The strobe notification device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to operate in the two different operating modes by alternating between the first mode and the second mode. 3. The strobe notification device of claim 1 , wherein the strobe element operates in the first mode at a shorter duration and higher luminosity than the strobe element operating when in the second mode. 4. The strobe notification device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to: receive one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to an environmental condition; and determine whether to operate the strobe element in the two different operating modes based on the environmental condition. 5. The strobe notification device of claim 4 , further comprising a sensor, the sensor in communication with the controller and configured to generate the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition. 6. The strobe notification device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor is configured to generate one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to ambient light; and wherein the controller is configured to determine whether to operate the strobe element in the first mode or to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereafter the second mode based on the parameter indicative of ambient light. 7. The strobe notification device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor is configured to generate one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to ambient light; wherein the controller is configured to operate the strobe element in the first mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is greater than a predetermined level; and wherein the controller is configured to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is less than the predetermined level. 8. The strobe notification device of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to determine whether to operate the strobe element in the first mode, in the second mode, or in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode based on the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition. 9. The strobe notification device of claim 8 , wherein the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition comprises a parameter pertaining to ambient light; wherein the controller is configured to determine whether to operate the strobe element in the first mode, in the second mode, or in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode based on an indication of the ambient light by: determining to operate the strobe element in the first mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is greater than a first predetermined amount; determining to operate the strobe element in the second mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is less than a second predetermined amount; and determining to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is less than the first predetermined amount and greater than the second predetermined amount. 10. The strobe notification device of claim 1 , wherein the first mode differs from the second mode in duration and luminosity. 11. A method for operating a strobe notification device in an alarm system, the strobe notification device configured to operate in two different operating modes, the two different operating modes comprising a first mode and a second mode, wherein the first mode and the second mode both have non-zero luminosity, wherein the first mode has at least one aspect of operation different from the second mode, the method comprising: receiving, via a communication interface, a command to activate the strobe notification device; and in response to receiving the command, sending at least one signal in order for the strobe element to operate in the first mode and thereafter the second mode. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the strobe notification device is configured to operate in the two different operating modes by alternating between the first mode and the second mode. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the strobe notification device operates in the first mode at a shorter duration and higher luminosity than the strobe notification device operating when in the second mode. 14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising a controller of the strobe notification device receiving one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to an environmental condition; and further comprising determining whether to operate the strobe element in the two different operating modes based on the indication of the environmental condition. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising sensing, using a sensor, the sensor configured to generate the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is configured to generate the one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to ambient light; and wherein determining whether to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereafter the second mode is based on an indication of ambient light. 17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is configured to generate one or more signals indicative of a parameter pertaining to ambient light; and wherein the strobe notification appliance is operated in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode in response to determining that the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to ambient light is less than a predetermined level. 18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the strobe notification appliance determines whether to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereafter in the second mode based on the one or more signals indicative of the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the parameter pertaining to the environmental condition comprises a parameter pertaining to ambient light; wherein determining whether to operate the strobe notification device in the second mode is based on an indication of the ambient light by: determining to operate the strobe element in the first mode and thereaft
