What is claimed is: 1. A battery comprising: a positive electrode and a negative electrode spirally wound to form a wound body; an electrolyte; a negative current collector of the negative electrode having (a) a first principal plane facing outward and corresponding to an outer face of the wound body and (b) a second principal plane facing inward and corresponding to an inner face of the wound body, and an active material layer comprising Si or Sn on at least one of the first principal plane and the second principal plane of the negative current collector, wherein, a surface roughness of the first principal plane of the negative current collector is higher than a surface roughness of the second principal plane of the negative current collector, and the surface roughness of the first principal plane is in a range of 0.2 μm to 3.0 μm both inclusive. 2. A battery according to claim 1 , wherein: the active material layer on the negative current collector includes the first principal plane and the second principal plane; and one of the first principal plane and the second principal plane has a thickness of 80 μm or more at full discharge. 3. A battery according to claim 1 , wherein the active material layer on the negative current collector exhibits a volume change of 10% or more at full charge and full discharge. 4. A battery according to claim 1 , wherein at least part of the active material layer is alloyed with the negative current collector. 5. The battery according to claim 1 wherein the negative current collector has a thickness of about 5 μm to 30 μm, both inclusive. 6. The battery according to claim 1 wherein the difference between the surface roughness of the first principal plane and the second principal plane is equal to or greater than 0.05 μm.
