The present disclosure is generally directed to a strain sensor, system and method of fabrication and use that includes an optical fiber, an optical signal generator that transmits an optical signal through the optical fiber, at least two photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber separated by a first segment of optical fiber, a photo-detector that detects a reflected optical signal from the at least two photonic crystal slabs, and a processor that computes a mechanical strain over the first segment of optical fiber based on the reflected optical signal detected by the photo-detector.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of measuring a mechanical strain, comprising: emitting, with an optical signal generator, an optical signal; receiving, at an optical fiber, the optical signal from the optical signal generator; disposing at least two photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber and separated by a first segment of the optical fiber, wherein each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs includes a plurality of holes extending from a first surface to a second surface of the respective photonic crystal slab, wherein the first surface and the second surface of each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs are arranged to have a zero or substantially zero angle of incidence relative to an optical axis of the optical fiber; detecting, with a photo-detector, a reflected optical signal from the at least two photonic crystal slabs; and computing, with a processor, configured to compute the mechanical strain occurring over the first segment of the optical fiber based on the reflected optical signal detected by the photo-detector. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the disposing includes each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs comprising a monolithic photonic crystal lattice including the plurality of holes. 3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising arranging center axes of the plurality of holes to be parallel or substantially parallel to the optical axis of the optical fiber. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the disposing includes each of the plurality of holes having a diameter in a range from 0.25 microns to 1.0 micron. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the disposing comprising disposing a plurality of segments including the first segment and wherein the at least two photonic crystal slabs comprise at least two pairs of the photonic crystal slabs, wherein each segment of the plurality of segments is each bounded by a corresponding pair of the at least two pairs of photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber, wherein each of the corresponding pair of the at least two pairs of photonic crystal slabs form a Fabry-Perot (etalon) Interferometer. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the detecting includes the photo-detector detecting the reflected optical signals from each corresponding pair of the at least two photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber, and the computing includes the processor computing the mechanical strain over each of the plurality of segments of the optical fiber based on each respective reflected optical signal. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the emitting includes the optical signal generator generating the optical signal having a plurality of wavelength-specific optical signals, wherein each of the plurality of wavelength-specific optical signals corresponds to a predetermined corresponding pair of the at least two photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating for each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs, the respective first surface and the respective second surface by a thickness in a range from 400 microns to 500 microns. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising physically attaching each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs to an object associated with the mechanical strain. 10. A method, comprising: disposing at least two photonic crystal slabs within an optical fiber and separated by a first segment of the optical fiber, wherein each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs includes a plurality of holes extending from a first surface to a second surface of the respective photonic crystal slab, wherein the first surface and the second surface of each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs are arranged to have a zero or substantially zero angle of incidence relative to an optical axis of the optical fiber, wherein the optical fiber is configured to receive an optical signal emitted from an optical signal generator, and the optical signal is configured to be reflected from the at least two photonic crystal slabs, and the optical fiber is configured to be coupled to a photo-detector that can detect the reflected optical signal. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the disposing includes each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs comprises a monolithic photonic crystal lattice including the plurality of holes. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising arranging center axes of the plurality of holes to be parallel or substantially parallel to the optical axis of the optical fiber. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the disposing includes each of the plurality of holes having a diameter in a range from 0.25 microns to 1.0 micron. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the disposing comprising disposing a plurality of segments including the first segment and wherein the at least two photonic crystal slabs comprise at least two pairs of the photonic crystal slabs, wherein each segment of the plurality of segments is each bounded by a corresponding pair of the at least two pairs of photonic crystal slabs within the optical fiber, wherein each of the corresponding pair of the at least two pairs of photonic crystal slabs form a Fabry-Perot (etalon) Interferometer. 15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising separating for each of the at least two photonic crystal slabs, the respective first surface and the respective second surface by a thickness in a range from 400 microns to 500 microns. 16. A method, comprising: joining a first photonic crystal lattice to a first end of a first segment of an optical fiber; joining one of a first end or a second end of a second segment of the optical fiber to the first photonic crystal lattice; and joining a second photonic crystal lattice to the other end of the second segment, wherein the first and the second photonic crystal lattices form a Fabry-Perot (etalon) Interferometer within the optical fiber between the first end and second end of the second segment of the optical fiber, wherein the first and the second optical fibers being fused silica communication grade optical fibers, wherein each of the first and the second photonic crystal lattices includes a plurality of holes extending from a first surface to a second surface of the respective one of the first and the second photonic crystal lattices, wherein the first surfaces and the second surfaces of each are arranged to have a zero or substantially zero angle of incidence relative to an optical axis of the first and the second optical fibers, wherein each of the plurality of holes having a diameter in a range from 0.25 microns to 1.0 micron. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: receiving, at the first segment of the optical fiber, an optical signal emitted by an optical signal generator fiber; reflecting the received optical signal from the first and the second photonic crystal lattices; detecting, with a photo-detector, the reflected optical signal; determining, with a processor, a mechanical strain occurring over the second segment of the optical fiber. 18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling the first and the second photonic crystal lattices to different portions of a surface, wherein the mechanical strain determined is associated with a mechanical strain of the surface. 19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: providing a plurality of Fabry-Perot (etalon) Interferometers within the optical fiber, each including a corresponding pair of photonic crystal lattices separated by a segment of the optical fiber. 20.
