A measurement system for measuring a parameter of the muscular-skeletal system is disclosed. The measurement system comprises a capacitor, a signal generator, a digital counter, counter register, a digital clock, a digital timer, and a data register. The sensor of the measurement system is the capacitor. The measurement system generates a repeating signal having a measurement cycle that corresponds to the capacitance of the capacitor. The capacitor comprises more than one capacitor mechanically in series. Electrically, the capacitor comprises more than one capacitor in parallel. In one embodiment, the capacitor includes a dielectric layer comprising polyimide. A force, pressure, or load is applied to the capacitor that elastically compresses the device. The capacitor is shielded from parasitic coupling and parasitic capacitance.

What is claimed is: 1. An orthopedic surgical system comprising: a reamer having a non-planar surface where the reamer is configured to cut bone of a muscular-skeletal system and where the reamer comprises: a sensor coupled to and conforming to the non-planar surface of the reamer; electronic circuitry coupled to the sensor where the electronic circuitry includes a transmitter and where the transmitter is configured to transmit measurement data from the sensor; and a housing where the electronic circuitry is within the housing of the reamer. 2. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 1 further including a remote system having a processor where the remote system receives and processes measurement data from the reamer. 3. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 2 where the reamer is configured to transmit position and trajectory data. 4. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 3 where the remote system is configured to use the position and trajectory data of the reamer to direct a position and trajectory of a tool. 5. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 1 where the sensor is configured to measure a force applied by the reamer to bone. 6. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 5 where the sensor couples to a cutting head of the reamer. 7. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 6 where the sensor is elastically compressible within a predetermined range. 8. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 7 where the non-planar surface is configured to be compliant to transfer the force to the sensor. 9. The surgical system of claim 8 where the sensor is an elastically compressible capacitor. 10. The surgical system of claim 8 further including a shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the sensor. 11. An orthopedic surgical system comprising: a reamer configured to cut bone of a muscular-skeletal system where the reamer comprises: a cutting head having a non-planar surface; a sensor coupled to and conforming to the non-planar surface of the cutting head; electronic circuitry coupled to the sensor where the electronic circuitry includes a transmitter to transmit measurement data from the sensor; a housing where the electronic circuitry is in the housing of the reamer; and a remote system having a processor configured to receive and process the measurement data. 12. The orthopedic surgical system of claim 11 where the reamer is configured to transmit position and trajectory data. 13.
