A needle removal device is provided for removing needles from suturing systems. In an embodiment, the needle removal device may include a base member configured to be selectively positioned substantially adjacent a proximal portion of a suturing system. The proximal portion of the suturing system may include a plurality of needle lumens. The needle removal device may also include a plurality of needle receptacles at least partially defined by the base member. The needle receptacles may be positioned and configured to generally correspond to the needle lumens of the suturing system. The needle receptacles may be further configured to selectively receive and grasp onto one or more needles extending proximally from the needle lumens of the suturing system.

What is claimed is: 1. A needle removal device comprising: a base member configured to be selectively positioned substantially adjacent a proximal portion of a suturing system, the base member having a peripheral edge bounded by a casing member, the proximal portion of the suturing system including a plurality of needle lumens; and a plurality of needle receptacles at least partially defined by the base member, each of the plurality of needle receptacles being positioned and configured to generally correspond to one of the plurality of the needle lumens of a suturing system, each of the plurality of the needle receptacles being further configured to selectively receive and grasp onto one or more needles extending proximally from the corresponding one of the plurality of needle lumens of the suturing system, wherein the base member being configured that upon an increasing radial force being applied to the peripheral edge thereof from movement of the casing member in a direction of a longitudinal axis of the plurality of needle receptacles, the base member compresses resulting in an inward radial force being applied to the one or more needles disposed therein. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the base member is further configured to allow a user to selectively exert a force in a proximal direction of about one quarter (0.25) pound-force to seventy (70) pound-force on the one or more needles to remove the one or more needles from the suturing system. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of needle receptacles include one or more gripping features configured to enhance the grasp of the needle receptacles on the one or more needles. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the needle receptacles extend through the base member, and further comprising: a shaft attached to an upper surface of the base member, the shaft including an outer threaded portion; a knob including an inner threaded portion configured to rotatably engage the outer threaded portion of the shaft; and the casing member attached to a bottom surface of the knob, the casing member including an inner surface configured to house the base member, the inner surface including a distal first diameter that tapers to a proximal second diameter, wherein the needle removal device is moveable between a receiving position, wherein the one or more needles are moveable within the needle receptacles, and a grasping position, wherein the base member deforms the needle receptacles to grasp the one or more needles within the needle receptacles. 5. The device of claim 4 , wherein relative axial movement between the knob and the base member causes the inner surface of the casing member to move the needle removal device between the receiving position and the grasping position. 6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the grasping position is further configured to allow a user to exert a force in a proximal direction of about one (1) to seventy (70) pound-force on the one or more needles to remove the suturing system. 7. A suturing system comprising: a plurality of needles; one or more sutures, each of the one or more sutures having an end attached to one of the plurality of needles; a guide body having a proximal end, a distal end, a central lumen, one or more suture lumens configured to receive at least a portion of the one or more sutures, and a plurality of needle lumens configured to receive the plurality of needles; a shaft moveably positioned within the guide body, the shaft being operably connected to the plurality of needles such that proximal movement of the shaft draws the plurality of needles into the plurality of needle lumens; and a needle removal device positioned substantially adjacent the proximal end of the guide body, the needle removal device including a resilient base member and a plurality of needle receptacles formed therein, each of the plurality of needle receptacles generally corresponding to each of the plurality of needle lumens and being substantially aligned therewith, the needle removal device being configured and positioned to selectively receive and remove one or more of the plurality of needles from the plurality of needle lumens, wherein upon a radial force being applied to a peripheral edge of the base member, at least one of the plurality of needle receptacles in the base member deforms thereby forming a compression fit between the needle receptacle and the needle disposed therein. 8. The suture system of claim 7 , wherein the needle removal device is selectively removable from the proximal end of the guide body. 9. The suturing system of claim 7 , wherein the needle removal device is moveable between a receiving position, wherein the needles are moveable within the needle receptacles, and a grasping position, wherein the needles are grasped within the needle receptacles by the needle removal device. 10. The suturing system of claim 9 , wherein the needle removal device in the grasping position is configured to allow a user to exert a force in a proximal direction of about one quarter (0.25) pound-force to seventy (70) pound-force on the one or more needles to remove the one or more needles from the needle lumens. 11. A needle removal device comprising: a base member configured to be selectively positioned substantially adjacent a proximal portion of a suturing device, the base member having a peripheral edge, the proximal portion of the suturing device including a plurality of needle lumens, the base member having a plurality of needle receptacles formed therein, each of the plurality of needle receptacles being positioned and configured to generally correspond to one of the plurality of the needle lumens of the suturing device, each of the plurality of the needle receptacles being further configured to selectively receive one or more needles extending proximally from the corresponding one of the plurality of needle lumens of the suturing device; a knob moveably attached to the base member; an outer casing attached to the knob, the outer casing being configured to at least partially receive the base member therein, the outer casing having an interior surface, at least a portion of interior surface of the outer casing having a smaller diameter than the diameter of the base member, wherein movement of the knob causes the base member to move longitudinally relative to the knob, as the base member moves longitudinally toward knob it is further received within outer casing thereby compressing the base member and causing at least one of the needle receptacles to apply an inward radial force on the one or more needles disposed therein so as to grasp the one or more needles extending from the corresponding one of the plurality of needle lumens of the suturing device. 12. The needle removal device of claim 11 , wherein the interior surface of the outer casing has a first diameter at a distal portion and a second diameter in a proximal portion.
