A light unit includes a bulb having a light source with lead wires and a separator, a switch member that includes a support member and a pair of spring terminals, and a socket having two or more conductive terminals and adapted to receive the bulb and the switch member. The switch member is adapted to cause the pair of spring terminals to contact one another to form an electrical short circuit across the pair of conductive terminals and the light source when the bulb is completely or partially removed from the socket. The lead wires form an electrical connection across the conductive terminals and the separator breaks contact between the pair of spring terminals when the bulb is seated in the socket.

What is claimed is: 1. A light unit for use in a light string, comprising: a bulb having a light source with lead wires and a separator; a switch member unit; a pair of spring terminals; and a socket having first and second opposing inner sidewalls and at least two conductive terminals on portions of said inner sidewalls and wherein said socket is adapted to receive the bulb and the switch member unit, wherein the switch member unit is adapted to cause the pair of spring terminals to contact one another to form an electrical short circuit across the pair of conductive terminals on the inner side wall of the socket and the light source when the bulb is completely or partially removed from the socket, and the separator breaks contact between the pair of spring terminals when the bulb is seated in the socket and wherein the bulb and socket have a longitudinal center axis defining generally a center line between right and left portions of each, the conductive body extending from said conductive terminal to a point spaced from said inner side wall and said center line, the conductive body extending from the other conductive terminal and extending across said center line to engage a portion of said first body. 2. The light unit of claim 1 wherein said switch member unit includes a first and second portions, said first portion extending from one inner sidewall toward but not across said center line and wherein said second portion extends from the other inner sidewall to said first portion beyond said center line and being biased into contact with said first portion from underneath said first portion, so that said separator can engage said second portion deflecting it downward to break electrical contact between said first and second portions in said switch member unit. 3. The light unit of claim 1 further including a second separator pin extending coaxially with said center line, from a bottom of the switch member unit into said socket. 4. The light unit of claim 1 wherein said first portion includes a first conductive element having an upper conductor spanning a portion of the space between said sidewalls and a sidewall conductor substantially orthogonal to said upper conductor and connected thereto, and a second conductive element having an upper conductor spanning a portion of the space between said sidewall and extending across said center line, and a sidewall conductor substantially orthogonal to said upper conductor, said second conductive element configured to engage said first conductive element on the underside of said upper conductor of said first conductive element and being biased into engagement therewith. 5. The light unit of claim 4 wherein said upper conductor of said second conductive element includes a curved distal portion which engages said first conductive element. 6. The light unit of claim 1 wherein said bodies are formed as a removable insert switching unit. 7. The light unit of claim 1 wherein said separator is positioned off center of the center line, and wherein said spring terminals comprise a conductive body. 8. The light unit of claim 1 wherein said first portion includes a first conductive element having an upper conductor spanning a portion of the space between said sidewalls to across the center line and a sidewall conductor substantially orthogonal to said upper conductor and connected thereto, and a second conductive element forming a triangular shape with a hypotenuse swing leg configured to be biased into electrical engagement with said first conductive element and shaped to engage said separator along at least a portion of said leg, whereby the separator can deflect said swing leg out of contact with said first conductive element. 9. A light unit for use in a light string, comprising: a bulb unit; a switch member; a socket having said inner conductive terminals on opposing inner walls and adapted to receive the bulb unit and the switch member, said bulb unit having a pair of conductive terminals and being sized to be received within the socket; the bulb unit including a separator element located on said bulb unit to be adjacent one of said inner walls of the socket and extends downwardly to engage said switch member wherein the switch member is adapted to form an electrical bridge circuit across the pair of conductive terminals when the bulb unit is completely or partially removed from the socket, wherein said switch member comprises a flexible unitary contact member spanning between the conductive terminals when said bulb unit is not installed in the socket, said flexible member having downwardly extending deflectable ends, said ends configured to electrically engage said inner conductive terminals, thereby connecting said conductive terminals, but when said separator is emplaced said lowermost contact surface of the bulb unit contacts at least one of said flexible deflectable ends so that at least one end is driven laterally thereby disconnecting contact between said flexible contact member and inner conducting terminals by moving said flexible member away from contact with said terminals. 10. The light unit of claim 9 wherein said switch member further includes a switch cap extending over said flexible contact member to seal said flexible contact member from water. 11. The light unit of claim 10 wherein said flexible contact member further includes a channel and wherein said switch cap includes a projection sized to be received in said channel to maintain said cap in position. 12. A light unit for use in a light string, comprising: a bulb unit; a switch member; a socket having said inner conductive terminals on opposing inner walls and adapted to receive the bulb unit and the switch member, said bulb unit having a pair of conductive terminals and being sized to be received within the socket; the bulb unit including a separator element located on said bulb unit to be adjacent one of said inner walls of the socket and extends downwardly to engage said switch member wherein the switch member is adapted to form an electrical bridge circuit across the pair of conductive terminals when the bulb unit is completely or partially removed from the socket, wherein said switch member comprises a flexible unitary contact member spanning between the conductive terminals when said bulb unit is not installed in the socket, said flexible member configured to electrically engage said inner conductive terminals, thereby connecting said conductive terminals, but when said separator is emplaced said lowermost contact surface of the bulb unit contacts at least a portion of the flexible member is deflected so that at it is driven laterally thereby disconnecting contact between said flexible contact member and inner conducting terminals by moving said flexible member away from contact with said terminals.
