Official abstract text for this publication.
An absorbent article has a pair of leg cuffs adapted to fit about the legs of a wearer and a pair of containment flaps adapted to provide a barrier to the lateral flow of body exudates. Each containment flaps includes a seam bonding the respective containment flap to the article and at least one elastic member spaced from the seam. A fastening system includes a primary fastening system and a secondary fastening system. The secondary fastening system comprises a pair of secondary first fastening components and a pair of secondary second fastening components. Each of the secondary first fastening components is laterally located relative to one of the containment flaps such that an outboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component is spaced laterally inward from the seam and an inboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component is spaced laterally outward from the elastic member.

What is claimed is: 1. An absorbent article having a longitudinal direction, a lateral direction, an inner surface, an outer surface, a front portion, a back portion, a crotch portion extending longitudinally between and connecting the front portion and the back portion, the absorbent article comprising: a bodyside liner at least in part defining the inner surface of the article; an outer cover at least in part defining the outer surface of the article; an absorbent core disposed between the bodyside liner and the outer cover; a pair of containment flaps extending in the longitudinal direction and adapted to provide a barrier to the lateral flow of body exudates, each of the containment flaps comprising a seam bonding the respective containment flap to the bodyside liner and at least one elastic member spaced from the seam; a fastening system configured to attach the back portion to the front portion to define a wear configuration of the absorbent article, the fastening system comprising a primary fastening system and a secondary fastening system separate from the primary fastening system, the secondary fastening system comprising a pair of secondary first fastening components and a pair of secondary second fastening components, each of the secondary first fastening components being disposed on the front portion and configured to engage one of the secondary second fastening components disposed on the back portion when the absorbent article is in the wear configuration, each of the secondary first fastening components being laterally located relative to one of the containment flaps such that an outboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component is spaced entirely laterally inward from the seam and an inboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component is spaced laterally outward from the elastic member. 2. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein each containment flap of the pair of containment flaps extends generally straight in the longitudinal direction such that a distance between the outboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component and the seam of the respective containment flap is generally constant along the length of the containment flaps. 3. The absorbent article set forth in claim 2 wherein the distance is between about 1 mm and about 45 mm. 4. The absorbent article set forth in claim 3 wherein the distance is between about 5 mm and about 35 mm. 5. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein each of the seams extends the entire length of the respective containment flap. 6. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein each of the containment flaps extends the entire length of the article. 7. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein one of the containment flaps is adjacent one side edge of the absorbent core and the other containment flap is adjacent the opposite side edge of the absorbent core. 8. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein each of the containment flaps includes an attached proximal end and a distal end, the attached proximal end being adhesively bonded to the article along the seam and the at least one elastic member being disposed adjacent the distal end. 9. The absorbent article set forth in claim 1 wherein the seam bonding the respective containment flap to the article is an adhesive seam. 10. An absorbent article in an unfolded and laid flat condition having a longitudinal direction, a lateral direction, an inner surface, an outer surface, a front portion, a back portion, a crotch portion extending longitudinally between and connecting the front portion and the back portion, the absorbent article comprising: a pair of containment flaps extending in the longitudinal direction and adapted to provide a barrier to the lateral flow of body exudates, each of the containment flaps comprising a seam bonding the respective containment flap to the article and at least one elastic member spaced from the seam; a pair of leg cuffs extending in the longitudinal direction and adapted to fit about the legs of a wearer; a fastening system configured to attach the back portion to the front portion to define a wear configuration of the absorbent article, the fastening system comprising a primary fastening system and a secondary fastening system separate from the primary fastening system, the secondary fastening system comprising a pair of secondary first fastening components and a pair of secondary second fastening components, each of the secondary first fastening components being disposed on the front portion and configured to engage one of the secondary second fastening components disposed on the back portion when the absorbent article is in the wear configuration, each of the secondary first fastening components being located relative to a respective one of the containment flaps such that, in the unfolded and laid flat condition, an outboard-most longitudinal edge of each of the secondary first fastening components is spaced laterally inward from the respective seam by a distance between about 1 mm and about 45 mm, the seam as it extends through the crotch portion of the article and the outboard-most longitudinal edge of the secondary first fastening component being spaced inboard of the respective leg cuff. 11. The absorbent article set forth in claim 10 wherein the distance is between about 5 mm and about 35 mm. 12. The absorbent article set forth in claim 11 wherein each of the containment flaps includes an attached proximal end and a distal end, the attached proximal end being adhesively bonded to the article along the seam and the at least one elastic member being disposed adjacent the distal end. 13. The absorbent article set forth in claim 11 wherein the seam bonding the respective containment flap to the article is an adhesive seam. 14. The absorbent article set forth in claim 10 wherein the secondary first fastening components are located in the lateral direction entirely between the seam bonding the respective containment flap to the article and the at least one elastic member. 15. The absorbent article set forth in claim 10 wherein the containment flaps extend at least through the crotch portion. 16. The absorbent article set forth in claim 15 wherein the containment flaps extend the entire length of the article. 17. An absorbent article having a longitudinal direction, a lateral direction, an inner surface, an outer surface, a front portion, a back portion, a crotch portion extending longitudinally between and connecting the front portion and the back portion, the absorbent article comprising: a bodyside liner at least in part defining the inner surface of the article; an outer cover at least in part defining the outer surface of the article; an absorbent core disposed between the bodyside liner and the outer cover; a pair of leg cuffs extending in the longitudinal direction and adapted to fit about the legs of a wearer; a pair of containment flaps extending in the longitudinal direction and adapted to provide a barrier to the lateral flow of body exudates, each of the containment flaps including an attached proximal end and a distal end, the attached proximal end being adhesively bonded to the article along a bond seam and the at least one elastic member being disposed adjacent the distal end, each of the containment flaps being adhesively bonded to the bodyside liner along the respective bond seam; a fastening system configured to attach the back portion to the front portion to define a wear configuration of the absorbent artic
