Several embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to medical visualization systems that comprise combinations of disposable and reusable components, such as catheters, functional handles, hubs, optical devices, etc. Other embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to features and aspects of an in-vivo visualization system that comprises an endoscope having a working channel through which a catheter having viewing capabilities is routed. the catheter may obtain viewing capabilities by being constructed as a vision catheter or by having a fiberscope or other viewing device selectively routed through one of its channels. The catheter is preferably of the steerable type so that the distal end of the catheter may be steered from its proximal end as it is advanced with the body. A suitable use for the in-vivo visualization system includes but is not limited to diagnosis and/or treatment of the duodenum, and particularly the biliary tree.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A catheter handle for steering a catheter shaft having a proximal region and a distal region and at least one elongate steering element having a distal end region secured at or near the distal region of the catheter shaft and a proximal end, the catheter handle comprising: a catheter handle housing having the proximal of the catheter shaft attached thereto; a steering controller carried by the catheter handle housing and having the proximal end of the at least one elongate steering element connected thereto, the steering controller being movable from a first position to a second position, the steering controller capable of applying tension to the at least one elongate steering element when the steering controller moves from the first position to the second position; and a lock mechanism for retaining the steering controller in the second position to prevent movement thereof, the lock mechanism movable between an unlocked position and a locked position and associated with the steering controller such that movement of the lock mechanism to the locked position causes at least one member fixedly attached to the at least one elongate steering element to translate along a first axis, thereby restricting movement of the steering controller. 2. The catheter handle of claim 1 , wherein the steering controller includes a first rotatable knob secured for rotation to a first pulley that is rotatably carried within the catheter handle housing; and wherein the lock mechanism rotates about an axis that is coaxial with a rotational axis of the first knob. 3. The catheter handle of claim 2 , wherein the steering controller includes a second rotatable knob secured for rotation to a second pulley that is rotatably carried within the catheter handle housing; wherein rotation of the first knob deflects the distal region of the catheter shaft along a first plane; and wherein rotation of the second knob deflects the distal region of the catheter shaft in a second plane, the second plane being perpendicular to the first plane. 4. The catheter handle of claim 3 , wherein the first knob is connected to the first pulley by a first shaft, the second knob is connected to the second pulley by a second shaft, and wherein the first shaft is positioned inside of the second shaft. 5. The catheter handle of claim 3 , wherein the lock mechanism further comprises a lever member connected to a lever, and a pulley member positioned adjacent to the second pulley; and wherein rotational movement of the lever causes translational movement of the pulley member. 6. The catheter handle of claim 5 , wherein the lever member comprises a first flange including a first cam profile that annularly extends around a perimeter of the first flange; wherein the pulley member comprises a second flange including a second cam profile that annularly extends around a perimeter of the second flange; and wherein the first cam profile is configured to engage with the second cam profile. 7. A catheter handle for steering a catheter shaft having a proximal region and a distal region and at least one elongate steering element having a distal end region secured at or near the distal region of the catheter shaft and a proximal end, the catheter handle comprising: a handle housing having the proximal region of the catheter shaft attached thereto; a steering controller carried by the handle housing and having the proximal end of the at least one elongate steering element connected thereto, the steering controller being movable from a first position to a second position, the steering controller capable of applying tension to the at least one elongate steering element when the steering controller moves from the first position to the second position; and a lock mechanism for retaining the steering controller in the second position to prevent movement thereof, the lock mechanism including a lever movable between an unlocked position and a locked position, the lever being associated with the steering controller such that movement of the lever to the locked position imparts translational movement to at least one member fixedly attached to the at least one elongate steering element, thereby restricting movement of the steering controller. 8. The catheter handle of claim 7 , wherein the steering controller includes a rotatable knob secured for rotation to a pulley that is rotatably carried within the handle housing. 9. The catheter handle of claim 8 , wherein the lever rotates about an axis that is coaxial with a rotational axis of the knob. 10. The catheter handle of claim 9 , wherein rotation of the lever affects movement of the pulley from an unengaged position to a position where the pulley contacts a portion of the handle housing. 11. The catheter handle of claim 10 , wherein the lock mechanism includes a rotary-to-reciprocating device that transmits rotation of the lever between the unlocked and locked positions into translational movement of the pulley. 12. A catheter handle for steering a catheter shaft having a proximal region and a distal region and at least one elongate steering element having a distal end region secured at or near the distal region of the catheter shaft and a proximal end, the catheter handle comprising: a handle housing having the proximal region of the catheter shaft attached thereto; a steering controller movable from a first position to a second position, wherein the proximal end of the at least one elongate steering element is operably coupled to the steering controller, and moving the steering controller from the first position to the second position deflects a distal end of the distal region of the catheter shaft in one plane; and a lock mechanism for retaining the steering controller in the second position to prevent movement thereof, the lock mechanism including a lever rotatable about a first axis between an unlocked position and a locked position, wherein rotating of the lever to the locked position causes at least one member fixedly attached to the at least one elongate steering element to translate along the first axis to restrict movement of the steering controller. 13. The catheter handle of claim 12 , wherein the steering controller includes a first rotatable knob configured to rotate a first pulley positioned within the handle housing, wherein the first axis is coaxial with a rotational axis of the first knob. 14. The catheter handle of claim 13 , wherein the steering controller includes a second rotatable knob configured to rotate a second pulley positioned within the handle housing, wherein rotation of the first knob deflects the distal region of the catheter shaft along a first plane, and rotation of the second knob deflects the distal region of the catheter shaft in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane. 15. The catheter handle of claim 14 , wherein the first knob is connected to the first pulley by a first shaft, and the second knob is connected to the second pulley by a second shaft, and the first shaft is positioned inside the second shaft. 16. The catheter handle of claim 14 , wherein the lock mechanism further comprises a lever member connected to a lever, and a pulley member positioned adjacent to the second pulley, wherein rotational movement of the lever causes translational movement of the pulley member. 17.
