Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for conducting a side bet in a game include receiving side bet parameters that control how the side bet is conducted. The side bet parameters may include a specified in-game event. Gameplay of the game by participants of the side bet may be monitored to determine whether the in-game event has occurred for one of the participants. If so, funds associated with the side bet may be apportioned to the winning participant.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating a gaming system including a processing circuit in communication with a plurality of gaming machines, said method comprising: receiving, at the processing circuit, side bet parameters that control how a side bet is conducted, the side bet parameters comprising a specified in-game event; generating, by the processing circuit, the side bet using the side bet parameters; linking, by the processing circuit, the side bet to accounts of participants of the side bet; monitoring, by the processing circuit, gameplay in a plurality of instances of a game on the plurality of gaming machines by the participants of the side bet, one or more of the plurality of instances of the game including a random determination and being conducted by one of the participants on one of the plurality of gaming machines following: (1) receipt of a physical item associated with a monetary value by an acceptor of said gaming machine; (2) establishment of a credit balance for said participant based at least in part on the monetary value associated with the received physical item; and (3) placement of a wager on said instance of the game following an actuation of a wager button of said gaming machine, wherein the credit balance is decreasable by said wager, increasable based on any awards for said instance of the game, and decreasable via actuation of a cashout button of said gaming machine to initiate a payout; funding, by the processing circuit, a side bet award with a portion of any awards of the participants for the plurality of instances of the game; determining, by the processing circuit, a winner of the side bet from among the participants based on the in-game event occurring in an instance of the game played by the winner; and apportioning the side bet award to the winner of the side bet. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing an invitation to join the side bet to one or more accounts. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the side bet parameters include a parameter specifying that the side bet is private; and wherein the invitation is provided to an account of a user specified in the side bet parameters. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the side bet parameters include a parameter specifying that the side bet is open to the public. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, at the processing circuit, a request to join the side bet from an account after the side bet has started; and funding, by the processing circuit, the side bet using a buy-in from the account requesting to join the side bet. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing a notification to the gaming machine of one of the plurality of participants regarding the current state of the side bet. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: associating, by the processing circuit, a non-player participant of the side bet with a player of the game; and determining, by the processing circuit, whether the non-player participant is the winner of the side bet based on the in-game event occurring for the associated player. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the game comprises at least one of: a video poker game, a video slot game, and a video blackjack game. 9. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: starting, by the processing circuit, the side bet in response to receiving a minimum number of invitation acceptances specified in the side bet parameters. 10. A gaming system comprising a processing circuit configured to operate with a plurality of gaming machines to: receive side bet parameters that control how a side bet is conducted, the side bet parameters comprising a specified in-game event; generate the side bet using the side bet parameters; link the side bet to accounts of participants of the side bet; monitor gameplay in a plurality of instances of a game on the plurality of gaming machines by the participants of the side bet, one or more of the plurality of instances of the game including a random determination and being conducted by one of the participants on one of the plurality of gaming machines following: (1) receipt of a physical item associated with a monetary value by an acceptor of said gaming machine; (2) establishment of a credit balance for said participant based at least in part on the monetary value associated with the received physical item; and (3) placement of a wager on said instance of the game following an actuation of a wager button of said gaming machine, wherein the credit balance is decreasable by said wager, increasable based on any awards for said instance of the game, and decreasable via actuation of a cashout button of said gaming machine to initiate a payout; fund a side bet award with a portion of any awards of the participants for the plurality of instances of the game; determine a winner of the side bet from among the participants based on the in-game event occurring in an instance of the game played by the winner; and apportion the side bet award to the winner of the side bet. 11. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to provide an invitation to join the side bet to one or more accounts. 12. The gaming system of claim 11 , wherein the side bet parameters include a parameter specifying that the side bet is private; and wherein the invitation is provided to an account of a user specified in the side bet parameters. 13. The gaming system of claim 11 , wherein the side bet parameters include a parameter specifying that the side bet is open to the public. 14. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to: receive a request to join the side bet from an account after the side bet has started; and fund the side bet using a buy-in from the account requesting to join the side bet. 15. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to operate with the plurality of gaming machines to: provide a notification to the gaming machine of one of the plurality of participants regarding the current state of the side bet. 16. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to: associate a non-player participant of the side bet with a player of the game; and determine whether the non-player participant is the winner of the side bet based on the in-game event occurring for the associated player. 17. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the game comprises at least one of: a video poker game, a video slot game, and a video blackjack game. 18. The gaming system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to: start the side bet in response to receiving a minimum number of invitation acceptances specified in the side bet parameters. 19. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having machine instructions stored therein, the instructions being executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform operations comprising: receiving side bet parameters that control how a side bet is conducted, the side bet parameters comprising a specified in-game event; generating the side bet using the side bet parameters; linking the side bet to accounts of participants of the side bet; monitoring gameplay in a plurality of instances of a game on a plurality of gaming machines by the participants of the side bet, one or more of the plurality of instances of the game including a random determination and being conducted by one of the participants on one of the plurality of gaming machines following: (1) receipt of a physic
