A storage system includes a rack with a plurality of layers, each layer including an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle defining storage locations for items. A shuttle usable with the rack includes a first cart movable along the aisle and a second cart configured to be carriable by the first cart and to be movable along a row. The second cart is configured to carry an item between the first cart and the storage locations. A conveyor is located on one of the first or second carts to move the item onto or off the first cart. Related methods of storing and/or retrieving items from a rack are also disclosed. A rack system is disclosed and is readily assembled without welding, transferring loading so that the weight of the rack and any item stored therein is supported by the upright elements via support brackets.

We claim: 1. A method of storing an item in a storage position in a rack having a plurality of layers, each layer having an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle, each aisle having a loading position at an end thereof, the method using a dual shuttle having a first cart and a second cart, the first cart being movable along the aisle and the second cart being movable along the rows and being carriable along the aisle by the first cart, the method comprising: moving the item to the loading position by using a conveyor on a lift and a conveyor on the layer adjacent the loading position; placing the item on the first cart at the loading position by pulling the item onto the first cart using a conveyor on one of the first or second carts and the conveyor on the layer; moving the item along the aisle to a row using the first cart; removing the item from the first cart using the second cart; moving the item to the storage position using the second cart while the first cart returns to the loading position; and placing the item at the storage position using the second cart. 2. The method of claim 1 , further including lifting the item to the loading position in a given layer using a lift. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second cart is located on the first cart when the item is placed on the first cart. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second cart is located along the row when the item is placed on the first cart. 5. A method of storing an item in a storage position in a rack having a plurality of layers, each layer having an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle, each aisle having a loading position at an end thereof, the method using a dual shuttle having a first cart and a second cart, wherein the first cart has a first motor for moving the first cart along the aisle and a second motor for driving a conveyor, the first cart being movable along the aisle and the second cart being movable along the rows and being carriable along the aisle by the first cart, the method comprising: moving the item to the loading position by using a conveyor on a lift and a conveyor on the layer adjacent the loading position; placing the item on the first cart at the loading position by pulling the item onto the first cart using a conveyor on one of the first or second carts and the conveyor on the layer; moving the item along the aisle to a row using the first cart; removing the item from the first cart using the second cart; moving the item to the storage position using the second cart; and placing the item at the storage position using the second cart. 6. The method of claim 5 , including powering the second cart using an energy storage device located on the second cart. 7. The method of claim 6 , further including charging the energy storage device via electrical contact between the second cart and the first cart. 8. The method of claim 6 , further including charging the energy storage device via electrical contact between the first cart and the rack. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the energy storage device is a battery. 10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the energy storage device is a capacitor. 11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second cart has a raisable top platform, a first motor for moving the second cart along the rows and a second motor for selectively raising the top platform to lift an item. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the top platform is raised by a camming device that rotates around a horizontal axis. 13. A method of retrieving an item from a rack having a plurality of layers, each layer having an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle, each aisle having a loading position at an end thereof, the item being located in a storage position along a given aisle and in a given row within the rack, the method using a dual shuttle having a first cart and a second cart, the first cart being movable along the aisle and the second cart being movable along the rows and being carriable along the aisle by the first cart, the method comprising: removing the item from the storage position in the given row using the second cart; moving the item along the row using the second cart; moving the item onto the first cart; moving the item along the aisle to the loading position using the first cart; and removing the item from the first cart at the loading position by pulling the item off the first cart using a conveyor on one of the first or second carts, a conveyor on the layer adjacent the loading position, and a conveyor on a lift. 14. The method of claim 13 , further including lowering the item from the loading position in a given layer using a lift. 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second cart is located on the first cart when the item is removed from the first cart. 16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second cart is located along the row when the item is removed from the first cart. 17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second cart remains at the row while the first cart moves to the loading position with the item. 18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second cart returns to the loading position on the first cart while the first cart moves to the loading position with the item. 19. The method of claim 13 , including powering the second cart using an energy storage device located on the second cart. 20. The method of claim 19 , further including charging the energy storage device via electrical contact between the second cart and the first cart. 21. The method of claim 19 , further including charging the energy storage device via electrical contact between the first cart and the rack. 22. The method of claim 19 , wherein the energy storage device is a battery. 23. The method of claim 19 , wherein the energy storage device is a capacitor. 24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first cart has a first motor for moving the first cart along the aisle and a second motor for driving a conveyor. 25. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second cart has a raisable top platform, a first motor for moving the second cart along the rows and a second motor for selectively raising the top platform to lift an item. 26.
