Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fastener cartridge assembly. The fastener cartridge assembly can comprise a fastener, a cartridge body, and a tissue thickness compensator. The fastener can comprise a base, a first leg extending from the base, and a second leg extending from the base. The cartridge body can comprise a fastener cavity for receiving the fastener and a trajectory control for controlling the trajectory of the first and second legs of the fastener. The fastener can be removable from the fastener cavity along a fastener axis. The trajectory control can extend inwardly toward the fastener axis and can bias the first leg and the second leg toward alignment with the fastener axis when the fastener is positioned in the fastener cavity.

What is claimed is: 1. A fastener cartridge assembly, comprising: a fastener, comprising: a base; a first leg extending from said base; and a second leg extending from said base; a cartridge body, comprising: a fastener cavity, wherein said fastener is removably positioned in said fastener cavity, and wherein said fastener is removable from said fastener cavity along a fastener axis; and a trajectory control extending inwardly toward said fastener axis, wherein said trajectory control biases said first leg and said second leg toward alignment with said fastener axis when said fastener is positioned in said fastener cavity; and a tissue thickness compensator. 2. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said fastener cavity further comprises: a proximal end, wherein a first portion of said trajectory control extends inward from said proximal end; and a distal end, wherein a second portion of said trajectory control extends inward from said distal end. 3. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said fastener cavity defines a first width, and wherein said trajectory control defines a second width that is less than said first width. 4. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said tissue thickness compensator is releasably secured to said cartridge body. 5. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said fastener is movable along said fastener axis from an unfired configuration to a fired configuration, and wherein said first leg and said second leg are at least partially embedded in said tissue thickness compensator when said fastener is in the unfired configuration. 6. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising: a staple, comprising: a base; a first leg extending from said base; and a second leg extending from said base; a cartridge body, comprising: a cavity, wherein said staple is removably positioned in said cavity, and wherein said cavity defines a cavity length between a first end of said cavity and a second end of said cavity; and a staple stressor, comprising: a first guide; and a second guide, wherein said staple stressor defines a stressor length between said first guide and said second guide, and wherein said stressor length is less than said cavity length; and a tissue thickness compensator. 7. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first guide extends from the first end of said cavity, and wherein said second guide extends from the second end of said cavity. 8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first guide comprises a proximal guide, and wherein said second guide comprises a distal guide. 9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein said base of said staple defines a base length, and wherein said stressor length matches said base length. 10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first guide biases said first leg perpendicular to said base and wherein said second guide biases said second leg perpendicular to said base when said staple is positioned in said cavity. 11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of said staple is embedded in said tissue thickness compensator. 12. A fastener cartridge assembly, comprising: a fastener, comprising: a base; and a pair of legs extending from said base; a cartridge body, comprising: a deck; and a fastener cavity defined through said deck, wherein said fastener is removably positioned in said fastener cavity, wherein said fastener cavity comprises a pair of inwardly extending leg-splay resistors, and wherein said leg-splay resistors resist outward splay of said pair of legs of said fastener when said fastener is positioned between said leg-splay resistors; and a tissue thickness compensator. 13. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said fastener is removable from said fastener cavity along a fastener axis, wherein said leg-splay resistors bias said pair of legs into a biased configuration, and wherein said pair of legs are parallel to said fastener axis in said biased configuration. 14. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein at least a portion of said fastener is embedded in said tissue thickness compensator. 15. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said fastener is movable from an unfired configuration to a fired configuration, and wherein said fastener is at least partially embedded in said tissue thickness compensator when in said unfired configuration. 16. A fastener cartridge assembly, comprising: a fastener, comprising: a base; and a pair of outward-splaying legs extending from said base; a cartridge body, comprising: a fastener cavity, wherein said fastener is removably positioned in said fastener cavity; and means for biasing said pair of outward-splaying legs perpendicular to said base when said fastener is positioned in said fastener cavity; and a tissue thickness compensator. 17. A fastener cartridge assembly, comprising: a fastener, comprising: a base; a first leg extending from said base; and a second leg extending from said base; a cartridge body, comprising: a fastener cavity, wherein said fastener is removably positioned in said fastener cavity, and wherein said fastener is removable from said fastener cavity along a fastener axis; and a set of control nodes extending inwardly toward said fastener axis, wherein said set of control nodes biases said first leg and said second leg toward alignment with said fastener axis when said fastener is positioned in said fastener cavity; and a tissue thickness compensator. 18. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 17 , wherein said cartridge body comprises a deck, and wherein said set of control nodes further comprises a set of release points positioned above said deck. 19. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 18 , wherein said cartridge body further comprises a second set of control nodes extending inwardly toward said fastener axis, wherein said second set of control nodes biases said first leg and said second leg toward alignment with said fastener axis when said fastener is positioned in said fastener cavity. 20. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 19 , wherein said second set of control nodes further comprises a set of release points positioned below said deck. 21. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 17 , wherein said set of control nodes releases said first leg and said second leg prior to deformation of said fastener. 22. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 17 , wherein said set of control nodes releases said first leg and said second leg after at least partial deformation of said fastener.
