Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various high speed shielded cables are used in combination with a connector assembly. The connector assembly includes a plurality of electrical terminations in electrical contact with the conductor sets of the cable at a first end of the cable, the electrical terminations configured to make electrical contact with corresponding mating electrical terminations of a mating connector and at least one housing configured to retain the plurality of electrical terminations in a planar, spaced apart configuration.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A shielded electrical cable, comprising: a plurality of differential pairs extending along a length of the cable and being arranged generally in a plane along a width of the cable, each differential pair including two or more insulated conductors and being substantially surrounded by a shield; first and second non-conductive polymeric layers disposed on opposite sides of the cable, the first and second layers including cover portions and pinched portions arranged such that, in transverse cross section, the cover portions of the first and second layers in combination substantially surround the plurality of differential pairs, and the pinched portions of the first and second layers in combination form pinched portions of the cable on each side of the plurality of differential pairs; and an adhesive layer bonding the first non-conductive polymeric layer to the second non-conductive polymeric layer in the pinched portions of the cable, wherein the first and second non-conductive polymeric layers are spaced apart within 0.05 mm of each other in the pinched portions along the length of the cable; wherein: a maximum separation between the cover portions of the first and second non-conductive polymeric layers is D; a minimum separation between the pinched portions of the first and second non-conductive polymeric layers is d 1 ; d 1 /D is less than 0.25; and a high frequency electrical isolation of a first insulated conductor of a first differential pair in the plurality of differential pairs relative to a second insulated conductor of the first differential pair is substantially less than a high frequency electrical isolation of the first differential pair relative to an adjacent second differential pair in the plurality of differential pairs. 2. The cable of claim 1 , wherein d 1 /D is less than 0.1. 3. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the high frequency isolation of the first insulated conductor relative to the second insulated conductor is a first far end crosstalk C 1 at a specified frequency range of 3-15 GHz and a length of 1 meter, and the high frequency isolation of the first differential pair relative to the adjacent second differential pair is a second far end crosstalk C 2 at the specified frequency, and wherein C 2 is at least 10 dB lower than C 1 . 4. The cable of claim 1 in combination with a connector assembly, the connector assembly comprising: a first set of electrical terminations in electrical contact with the differential pairs at a first end of the cable; a second set of electrical terminations in electrical contact with the differential pairs at a second end of the cable; and at least one housing comprising: a first end configured to retain the first set of electrical terminations in a planar, spaced apart configuration; and a second end configured to retain the second set of electrical terminations in a planar, spaced apart configuration.
