The invention claimed is: 1. An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) comprising: an anode; a cathode; and a light emitting layer comprising at least one compound of the formula I: wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of H, C 1-6 alkyl, C(O)C 1-6 alkyl, CN, and C(O)OC 1-6 alkyl; R 2 is selected from the group consisting of CN, NO 2 , C 1-6 alkyl and aryl, wherein the aryl is optionally independently substituted one or more times with halogen, C 1-6 alkyl or OC 1-6 alkyl; and X − is an anion or a dianion. 2. The OLED of claim 1 , wherein the anion is a halide ion, a sulfate ion, a tetrafluoroborate ion, a perchlorate ion, a hexafluorophosphate ion, or a borate ion. 3. The OLED of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of C(O)C 1-6 alkyl, CN, and C(O)OC 1-6 alkyl. 4. The OLED of claim 1 , wherein R 2 is phenyl and is optionally independently substituted one or more times with halogen, C 1-6 alkyl or OC 1-6 alkyl. 5. The OLED of claim 1 , wherein the compound of formula I is one of the following compounds: 6. A compound of the formula I′: wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of C(O)C 1-6 alkyl, CN, and C(O)OC 1-6 alkyl; R 2 is selected from the group consisting of H, halogen, C 1-6 alkyl and OC 1-6 alkyl; and X − is an anion or a dianion. 7. The compound of claim 6 , wherein the anion is a halide ion, a sulfate ion, a tetrafluoroborate ion, a perchlorate ion, a hexafluorophosphate ion, or a borate ion. 8. The compound of claim 6 , wherein R 2 is selected from the group consisting of halogen, C 1-6 alkyl, and OC 1-3 alkyl. 9. The compound of claim 6 , wherein R is in the para position. 10. The compound of claim 6 , wherein the compound of formula I′ is
