Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Technology is provided for a strut hanger for connecting a strut to a hanger rod includes a hook portion configured to engage the exterior surface of the hanger rod, a lever portion, a fulcrum disposed between the hook portion and lever portion, and a strut tab extending from the lever portion and configured to engage a strut. Load placed on the strut tab causes the lever portion to act against the fulcrum to force the hook portion against the hanger rod, thereby supporting the strut from the hanger rods without fasteners attached to the hanging rods. The strut hanger can include a clip extending from the lever portion to engage the hanger rod and maintain a minimum load on the lever.

What is claimed is: 1. A hanger for use with a rod, comprising: a hook portion configured to engage the rod; a lever portion; a fulcrum disposed between the hook portion and the lever portion such that the fulcrum contacts the rod when the hook portion engages the rod; and a support tab extending from the lever portion on a side opposite the fulcrum, whereby a load placed on the support tab causes the lever portion to act against the fulcrum to force the hook portion against the rod. 2. The hanger according to claim 1 , wherein the hook portion is configured to engage one or more recesses along the rod. 3. The hanger according to claim 1 , further comprising a clip extending from the lever portion to engage the rod and maintain a minimum load on the lever portion. 4. The hanger according to claim 3 , further comprising a fastener extending between the clip and the lever portion and operative to clamp the rod between the clip and the lever portion. 5. The hanger according to claim 1 , wherein the support tab is configured to engage a strut. 6. The hanger according to claim 5 , wherein the support tab includes a pair of ears positioned to engage sides of a strut. 7. The hanger according to claim 1 , wherein the hook portion and lever portion are oriented with respect to each other at an obtuse angle. 8. The hanger according to claim 1 , wherein the hook portion, lever portion, and the fulcrum are integrally formed from a sheet metal material. 9. The hanger according to claim 8 , wherein the fulcrum comprises a bend in the sheet metal material. 10. A strut hanger for connecting a strut to a hanger rod, the strut hanger comprising: a hook portion configured to engage one or more recesses or projections of the hanger rod; a lever portion oriented at an obtuse angle with respect to the hook portion; a fulcrum disposed between the hook portion and the lever portion such that the fulcrum contacts the hanger rod when the hook portion engages the hanger rod; a clip extending from the lever portion to engage the hanger rod and maintain a minimum load on the lever portion; and a strut tab extending from the lever portion on a side opposite the fulcrum and configured to engage a strut, whereby a load placed on the strut tab causes the lever portion to act against the fulcrum to force the hook portion against the one or more recesses or projections. 11. The strut hanger according to claim 10 , further comprising a fastener extending between the clip and the lever portion and operative to clamp the hanger rod between the clip and the lever portion. 12. The strut hanger according to claim 10 , wherein the strut tab includes a pair of ears positioned to engage sides of the strut. 13. The strut hanger according to claim 10 , wherein the hook portion, the lever portion, the clip, and the fulcrum are integrally formed from a sheet metal material. 14. The strut hanger according to claim 10 , wherein the fulcrum comprises a bend in the sheet metal material. 15. A strut unit, comprising: an elongate support; and a pair of hangers disposed on opposite ends of the elongate support, each hanger including: a hook portion configured to engage a corresponding rod; a lever portion; and a fulcrum disposed between the hook portion and the lever portion such that the fulcrum contacts the corresponding rod when the hook portion engages the corresponding rod; wherein the elongate support extends between the lever portions on a side opposite the fulcrums, whereby a load placed on the elongate support causes the lever portions to act against the fulcrums to force the hook portions against the corresponding rods. 16. The strut unit according to claim 15 , wherein the hook portions are configured to engage one or more recesses or projections on the corresponding rods. 17. The strut unit according to claim 15 , further comprising a clip extending from the lever portion to engage the corresponding rod and maintain a minimum load on the lever portion.
