Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Provided is a washing machine including an auxiliary washing unit configured with an auxiliary washing space formed separately from a main washing space formed in a rotating tub, and a discharging assembly by which the auxiliary washing space and the main washing space are selectively in communication with each other. Through such a structure, auxiliary washing may be independently performed, and washing efficiency may be enhanced.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A washing machine comprising: a main body having a first washing space to hold laundry to be machine washed by the washing machine; and an auxiliary washing unit having a second washing space configured to contain water and to hold laundry to be hand washed in the second washing space with the water contained in the second washing space, wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a laundry discharging hole, and the auxiliary washing unit is configured to be pivotable with respect to the main body so that laundry held in the second washing space is dischargeable through the laundry discharging hole to the first washing space when the auxiliary washing unit is pivoted. 2. The washing machine according to claim 1 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit further includes a discharging door configured to open and close the laundry discharging hole. 3. The washing machine according to claim 2 , wherein the discharging door is pivotable with respect to the auxiliary washing unit to open and close the laundry discharging hole. 4. The washing machine according to claim 1 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a pair of discharging doors that pivot in opposite directions to open the laundry discharging hole and to close the laundry discharging hole. 5. The washing machine according to claim 1 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a discharging door configured to adjust an opening of the laundry discharging hole. 6. The washing machine according to claim 5 , wherein the discharging door is slideable with respect to the auxiliary washing unit to thereby adjust the opening of the laundry discharging hole. 7. A washing machine comprising: a main body having a first washing space; and an auxiliary washing unit having a concave second washing space to contain water and to hold laundry to be hand washed with the water contained in the second washing space, the auxiliary washing unit being seatable on the main body so that, when the auxiliary washing unit is seated on the main body, the second washing space faces upward, wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a drain through which water in the second washing space is drainable, a laundry discharging hole extending from the drain to discharge laundry held in the second washing space into the first washing space, and a discharging door configured to open and close the laundry discharging hole. 8. The washing machine according to claim 7 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a unit body forming the second washing space, and the laundry discharging hole is formed in the unit body. 9. The washing machine according to claim 8 , wherein the laundry discharging hole is disposed under the drain. 10. The washing machine according to claim 8 , wherein the unit body includes a bottom part, and a side part that extends from the bottom part at an inclination to form the second washing space. 11. The washing machine according to claim 10 , wherein the laundry discharging hole is formed in the side part of the unit body. 12. The washing machine according to claim 10 , wherein the laundry discharging hole extends from the side part of the unit body to the bottom part of the unit body. 13. The washing machine according to claim 10 , wherein the laundry discharging hole is formed in the bottom part of the unit body. 14. The washing machine according to claim 7 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit is configured to be pivotable with respect to the main body so that laundry held in the second washing space is dischargeable through the laundry discharging hole to the first washing space when the auxiliary washing unit is pivoted. 15. A washing machine comprising: a main body having a first washing space and an opening through which laundry is received into the first washing space; and an auxiliary washing unit having a recessed second washing space separated from the first washing space, wherein the auxiliary washing unit includes a recessed portion through which to discharge an object in the second washing space into the first washing space, and the auxiliary washing unit is configured to be pivotably coupled to the washing machine so that the auxiliary washing unit pivots and thereby tilts with respect to the main body to cause the object in the second washing space to be discharged into the first washing space through the recessed portion. 16. The washing machine according to claim 15 , wherein: the auxiliary washing unit further includes first and second pivot parts coupled to a side of the auxiliary washing unit to allow the auxiliary washing machine to pivot, and the recessed portion is between the first and second pivot parts. 17. The washing machine according to claim 15 , wherein the recessed portion is formed in a portion of an upper end of a side of the auxiliary washing unit. 18. The washing machine according to claim 15 , wherein the auxiliary washing unit further includes a cover configured to enlarge an area of the recessed portion.
