A handheld grinder comprising a housing; a grinding disk; a motor; an output shaft connected to the grinding disk and the motor to impart rotary motion thereto; and a circuit board residing in the housing and having thereon a rectifier that receives an alternating current and converts the alternating current to a direct current, a switching arrangement having a plurality of motor switches connected electrically between the rectifier and the motor and operates to deliver the direct current from the rectifier to the motor, a capacitor connected electrically between the rectifier and the switching arrangement, wherein the capacitor is coupled in parallel across the rectifier, a driver circuit interfaced with the motor switches and operable to control switching operation of the motor switches, and a power switch connected electrically between the rectifier and the driver circuit and operable to selectively energize the driver circuit and power on the grinder disk.

What is claimed is: 1. A handheld grinder, comprising: an elongated housing having a grip portion that is shaped to be grasped by a user; a grinding disk; an electric motor having a drive shaft; an output shaft having a one end connected to the grinding disk and an opposing end drivably connected to the drive shaft of the motor to impart rotary motion thereto; and a circuit board residing in the housing, the circuit board having thereon a rectifier configured to receive power from an alternating current (AC) power source and operable to convert an alternating current to a direct current, a switching arrangement having a plurality of motor switches connected electrically between the rectifier and the electric motor and operates to deliver the direct current from the rectifier to the electric motor, a capacitor connected electrically between the rectifier and the switching arrangement, wherein the capacitor is coupled in parallel across the rectifier, a driver circuit interfaced with the motor switches and operable to control switching operation of the motor switches, and a power switch connected electrically between the rectifier and the driver circuit and operable by a tool operator to selectively energize the driver circuit and thereby power on the grinding disk. 2. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor is interposed between the rectifier and the switching arrangement. 3. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the power switch is interposed between the rectifier and the driver circuit. 4. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor operates at a first current and the power switch operates at a second current that is lower than the first current. 5. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the power switch operates at a voltage that is lower than a voltage at which the electric motor operates. 6. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , further comprising a cooling mechanism for cooling the handheld grinder. 7. The handheld grinder of claim 6 , wherein the cooling mechanism comprises a heat sink that is disposed adjacent to the rectifier such that the heat sink is abutting the rectifier. 8. The handheld grinder of claim 6 , wherein the cooling mechanism comprises a heat sink that is disposed on top of the switching arrangement. 9. The handheld grinder of claim 6 , wherein the cooling mechanism comprises a fan that is connected to the electric motor and that circulates air through the housing for cooling the handheld grinder when the electric motor is rotating. 10. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor has a capacitance of about 5 μF to 20 μF. 11. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , wherein the handheld grinder is configured to receive at least a current of 15 Amperes from the AC power source, at a voltage of from 90 Volts to 265 Volts; and wherein the handheld grinder is configured to generate an output such that a quotient obtained by dividing the output measured in Watts-out (Wout) by an input measured in Volt-Amps in (VAin) and further dividing by a capacitance of the capacitor in Farads (Fd) is greater than 10,000 Wout/VAin/Fd. 12. The handheld grinder of claim 1 , further comprising a controller interfaced with the driver circuit and operable to generate pulse width modulated (PWM) signals to control the electric motor. 13. A handheld power tool comprising: an elongated housing having a grip portion that is shaped to be grasped by a user; a brushless electric motor residing in the elongated housing and having a drive shaft; an end tool; an output shaft having a first end and a second end, the first end of the output shaft being connected to the drive shaft of the brushless electric motor and the second end of the output shaft being connected to the end tool to impart motion to the end tool when the brushless electric motor rotates; a fan driven by the brushless electric motor for circulating air through the elongated housing when the brushless electric motor is operating; and a circuit board residing in the elongated housing and having a longitudinal axis that is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the elongated housing, the circuit board having thereon a rectifier configured to receive power from an alternating current (AC) power source and operable to convert an alternating current to a direct current, a switching arrangement having a plurality of motor switches connected electrically between the rectifier and the brushless electric motor and operates to deliver the direct current from the rectifier to the brushless electric motor, a capacitor connected electrically between the rectifier and the switching arrangement, wherein the capacitor is coupled in parallel across the rectifier, a driver circuit interfaced with the motor switches and operable to control switching operation of the motor switches, a controller interfaced with the driver circuit and operable to provide pulse width modulated (PWM) signals to the driver circuit for driving the brushless electric motor, and a power switch connected electrically between the rectifier and the driver circuit and operable by a tool operator to selectively energize the driver circuit and thereby power on the end tool. 14. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , wherein the capacitor is interposed between the rectifier and the switching arrangement. 15. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , wherein the power switch is interposed between the rectifier and the driver circuit. 16. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , wherein the electric motor operates at a first current and the power switch operates at a second current that is lower than the first current. 17. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , wherein the power switch operates at a voltage that is lower than a voltage at which the electric motor operates. 18. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , further comprising a heat sink that is disposed adjacent to the rectifier and abutting the rectifier. 19. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , further comprising a heat sink that is disposed on top of the switching arrangement. 20. The handheld power tool of claim 13 , wherein the capacitor has a capacitance of about 5 μF to 20 μF. 21. The handheld power tool of claim 1 , wherein the handheld power tool is configured to receive at least a current of 15 Amperes from the AC power source at a voltage in a range from 90 Volts to 265 Volts; wherein the handheld power tool is configured to generate an output such that a quotient obtained by dividing the output measured in Watts-out (Wout) by an input measured in Volt-Amps in (VAin) and further dividing by a capacitance of the capacitor in Farads (Fd) is greater than 5,000 Wout/VAin/Fd. 22. A handheld grinder comprising: an elongated housing having a grip portion that is shaped to be grasped by a user; a brushless electric motor residing in the elongated housing and having a drive shaft; a grinding disk; an output shaft having a first end and a second end, the first end of the output shaft being connected to the drive shaft of the brushless electric motor and the second end of the output shaft being connected to the grinding disk to impart rotary motion to the grinding disk when the brushless electric motor rotates; and a circuit board residing in the housing, the circuit board having a longitudinal axis and a longitudinal axis of the circuit board being aligned with the longitudinal axis of the elongated housing, the circuit board having thereon a first set of so
