A control method for a cutting blade, particularly for cutting-off machines for logs of web material, interrupts operation of the cutting blade when deformation of the blade reaches a preset deformation value and resumes operation of the cutting blade when the deformation of the blade is less than another preset deformation value. The control method measures deformation values of at least a portion of the cutting blade, compares the measured deformation values with at least one preset deformation value set by an operator, and sends, according to signals coming from the result of the comparison, control signals to a motor of the machine to control the start up and/or the stop of the motor.

We claim: 1. A method of controlling a cutting-off machine for logs of web material, the cutting-off machine having a cutting blade for cutting the logs of web material, the cutting blade being movable by a motorization toward one of the logs to be cut, comprising the steps of: inputting first and second threshold deformation values of said blade into first and second comparison devices, respectively; rotating the cutting blade; using a measuring device to measure a deformation value on at least a portion of the rotating blade and to send a signal indicative of the measured deformation value, said signal being sent to both said first and second comparison devices; using said first comparison device to compare said measured deformation value with said first threshold deformation value and, when said measured deformation value exceeds said first threshold deformation value, sending a signal from said first comparison device to an actuator, and then sending a first control signal from said actuator to said motorization to stop movement of said blade toward the one log; using said second comparison device to compare said measured deformation value with said second threshold deformation value and, when said measured deformation value is less than said second threshold deformation value, sending a signal from said second comparison device to said actuator, and sending a second control signal from said actuator to said motorization to start moving said blade toward the one log. 2. A method according to claim 1 in which the step of using said first comparison device to compare said measured deformation value with said first threshold deformation value includes comparing a voltage value corresponding to said signal indicative of the measured deformation value with a maximum threshold voltage value indicative of said first threshold deformation value, and the step of using said second comparison device to compare said measured deformation value with said second threshold deformation value includes comparing a voltage value corresponding to said signal indicative of the measured deformation value with a minimum threshold voltage value indicative of said second threshold deformation value. 3. The method of claim 1 in which said first threshold deformation value is a maximum deformation threshold value, above which the cutting blade could be damaged, and said second threshold deformation value is a minimum threshold deformation value, at which the cutting blade does not risk any damage. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the measured deformation value is a lateral deformation of said blade. 5. The method of claim 1 in which said cutting blade is mounted for rotation about an axis and including the step of rotating said cutting blade when said motorization is stopped and the cutting blade is not moving toward the one log.
