A pitch monitoring system for use with a portable electronic device. The system includes a processor, a ball having a core and a cover assembly, at least one sensor for sensing movement of the ball, a data output device in communication with the sensor, and a non-transient computer-readable medium containing code. The cover assembly includes comprising panels joined by stitching and surrounding the core. The output device transmits the signals to the portable electronic device. The code directs the processor to receive signals indicating movement of the ball relative to a strike zone during a pitch of the ball by a first user, retrieve a batting characteristic of a simulated batter corresponding to the indicated movement of the ball relative to the strike zone during the pitch, and output a simulated pitch result for the pitch based on the retrieved batting characteristic of the simulated batter for the indicated movement.

What is claimed is: 1. A pitch monitoring system for use with a portable electronic device including a processor, the system comprising: a ball including a core and a cover assembly comprising panels joined by stitching and surrounding the core; at least one sensor for sensing movement of the ball; a data output device in communication with the sensor, wherein the data output device transmits the signals to the portable electronic device; and a non-transient computer-readable medium containing code to direct the processor to: receive signals indicating movement of a physical ball relative to a strike zone during a pitch of the ball by a first user, the strike zone being positioned at a location that is generally parallel to and proximate to a front edge of an actual or simulated home base, the received signals indicating at least one of a ball speed, a ball spin and a ball location relative to the strike zone during the pitch when the ball reaches or passes by the strike zone; retrieve a batting characteristic of a simulated batter corresponding to the indicated movement of the physical ball relative to the strike zone during the pitch, the retrieved batting characteristic of the simulated batter comprising a batting percentage corresponding to the at least one of the ball speed, the ball spin and the ball location; assign a simulated pitch result based upon the received signals and the batting characteristic and output a simulated pitch result for the pitch based on the retrieved batting characteristic of the simulated batter for the indicated movement. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensor is coupled to the ball, and wherein the at least one sensor outputs the signals. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the sensor communicates with the electronic device to enable the processor to determine an initial position of the ball and to track the motion of the ball as the ball is pitched; the processor assigning the strike zone at a predetermined distance from the initial position; the processor identifying the location of the ball at the predetermined distance and determining the location of the ball relative to the strike zone. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor identifies at least one of the speed of the ball and the spin of the ball at the predetermined distance. 5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the computing device is further to: retrieve, prior to the next pitch, different batting percentages and different batting results for the simulated batter for different ball speeds, ball spins and/or ball locations; and output at least one of a recommended pitch speed, pitch location and pitch type for the simulated batter based upon the retrieved different batting percentages and different batting results. 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a backstop to be impacted by the ball, and wherein at least one of the at least one sensors are coupled to the backstop. 7. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a backstop to be impacted by the physical ball, wherein the backstop comprises at least one backstop sensor in communication with the portable electronic device. 8. The system of claim 7 wherein the backstop defines the strike zone. 9. The system of claim 8 wherein the system assigns a plurality of sections to area within the strike zone and at least one section to the area outside of the strike zone. 10. The system of claim 1 wherein the portable electronic device includes a display, and wherein the computing device outputs the simulated pitch result on the display. 11. The system of claim 2 , wherein the computing device is further to: retrieve, prior to the next pitch, different batting percentages and different batting results for the simulated batter for different ball speeds, ball spins and/or ball locations; and output at least one of a the retrieved different batting percentages and different batting results for the simulated batter. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is further to: track a plurality of simulated pitch results for pitches during a simulated at-bat by the simulated batter, wherein the retrieved batting percentage and batting result additionally correspond to a ball and strike count for the pitch. 13. The system of claim 5 , wherein the different batting percentages and different batting results retrieved for the simulated batter additionally vary based upon the ball and strike count and wherein the at least one of a recommended pitch speed, pitch location and pitch type for the simulated batter is additionally based upon the ball and strike count prior to the pitch. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computing device is further to track a plurality of simulated pitch results for pitches during a simulated at-bat by the simulated batter, wherein the retrieved batting percentage and batting result additionally correspond to a ball and strike count for the pitch, and wherein the different batting percentages and different batting results retrieved for the simulated batter additionally vary based upon the ball and strike count. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computing device is further to: track a sequence of pitches and at least one of the ball speed, the ball spin and the ball location for the sequence of pitches, wherein the simulated pitch result for the pitch is additionally based upon the sequence of pitches preceding the pitch during the simulated at-bat by the simulated batter. 16. The system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one of a recommended pitch speed, pitch location and pitch type for the simulated batter is additionally based upon the sequence of pitches preceding the pitch during the simulated at-bat by the simulated batter. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the computing device is further configured to recommend a pitch location that is out of the strike zone. 18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is further to: track a plurality of simulated at-bats for a plurality of simulated batters of a first team having a simulated batting order during a simulated inning by the simulated batters of the first team; and determine and output scoring during the simulated inning by the simulated batters based upon the simulated pitch results during the simulated inning by the simulated batters. 19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the computing device is further to: track a plurality of simulated innings by the first team for a simulated game; and determine and output scoring during the simulated game based upon the simulated pitch results during the plurality of simulated innings. 20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the computing device is further to: track a plurality of simulated at-bats for a plurality of simulated batters of a second team having a simulated batting order during a simulated inning by the simulated batters of the second team; track a plurality of simulated complete innings by the first and second teams and track a plurality of simulated complete innings for a simulated game; and determine and output scoring during the simulated game based upon the simulated pitch results during the plurality of simulated complete innings. 21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the computing device is further to allow for the plurality of simulated innings by the first and second teams to be associated with first and second users, respectively. 22.
