There is provided a system and method for a digital receipt for use with an interoperable keychest. There is provided a method for online registration of a digital receipt associated with a content, comprising performing a transaction to obtain from a first distributor the content encrypted by a title key and a first digital rights management (DRM) license usable with the first distributor to access the title key, receiving from the first distributor the digital receipt associated with the content including information relevant to the transaction, and transmitting the digital receipt to the interoperable keychest acting as a central key repository (CKR) for an online registration of the digital receipt associated with the content. Authorized media distributors may then generate new DRM licenses using the CKR, enabling interoperable content playback of the same universal file across different media distributors and clients.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for use by a client computer having a hardware processor and a non-transitory storage medium, the method comprising: performing a transaction, using the hardware processor of the client computer with a first distributor, to obtain access to a first media content; receiving, using the hardware processor of the client computer from the first distributor, a digital receipt associated with the first media content, wherein the digital receipt includes information relevant to the transaction, and wherein the digital receipt is registered with a key repository storing keys for accessing a plurality of media contents; storing, using the hardware processor of the client computer, the digital receipt in the non-transitory storage medium; transmitting, using the hardware processor of the client computer, the digital receipt retrieved from the non-transitory storage medium for a verification of the digital receipt by the key repository as a proof of the transaction; and obtaining, using the hardware processor of the client computer and in response to the transmitting of the digital receipt and the verification of the digital receipt by the key repository, a first digital rights management (DRM) license with a key for playing back the first media content, the key being stored in the key repository and associated with one of the plurality of media contents. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the client. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the first distributor. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt includes metadata regarding the first media content and data regarding the transaction including a transaction type and a transaction date. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the key repository. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt is registered by the first distributor. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital receipt is registered by the client. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the key is for playing back a copy of the first media content obtained from the first distributor. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the key is for playing back a copy of the first media content obtained from a second distributor. 10. A client device comprising: a non-transitory storage medium; and a hardware processor configured to: perform a transaction with a first distributor to obtain access to a first media content; receive, from the first distributor, a digital receipt associated with the first media content, wherein the digital receipt includes information relevant to the transaction, and wherein the digital receipt is registered with a key repository storing keys for accessing a plurality of media contents; store the digital receipt in the non-transitory storage medium; transmit the digital receipt retrieved from the non-transitory storage medium for a verification of the digital receipt by the key repository as a proof of the transaction; and obtain, in response to the transmitting of the digital receipt and the verification of the digital receipt by the key repository, a first digital rights management (DRM) license with a key for playing back the first media content, the key being stored in the key repository and associated with one of the plurality of media contents. 11. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the client. 12. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the first distributor. 13. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt includes metadata regarding the first media content and data regarding the transaction including a transaction type and a transaction date. 14. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt includes data regarding the key repository. 15. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt is registered by the first distributor. 16. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the digital receipt is registered by the client. 17. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the key is for playing back a copy of the first media content obtained from the first distributor. 18. The client device of claim 10 , wherein the key is for playing back a copy of the first media content obtained from a second distributor.
