Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A tissue thickness compensator may generally comprise a biocompatible material, a first component, and a second component, wherein the first component and second component form a reaction product to expand the tissue thickness compensator. The first component may comprise a first hydrogel precursor, the second component may comprise a second hydrogel precursor, and the reaction product may comprise a hydrogel. The reaction product may be formed in vivo and/or in situ by contacting the first component and the second component. The first component and/or second component may be encapsulated and configured to release the components when ruptured. The reaction product may comprise a fluid-swellable composition. Articles of manufacture comprising the tissue thickness compensator and methods of making and using the tissue thickness compensator are also described.

What is claimed is: 1. An article selected from an anvil of a stapling apparatus and a staple cartridge for a stapling apparatus, the article comprising: a tissue thickness compensator comprising: an outer layer comprising polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, polydioxanone, polyhydroxyalkanoate, poliglecaprone, polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof; and an inner layer comprising oxidized regenerated cellulose, a first encapsulated component comprising a first hydrogel precursor, and a second encapsulated component comprising a second hydrogel precursor; wherein the first hydrogel precursor and second hydrogel precursor form a hydrogel to expand the tissue thickness compensator when the first encapsulated component and second encapsulated component are ruptured. 2. An article selected from an anvil of a stapling apparatus and a staple cartridge for a stapling apparatus, the article comprising: a tissue thickness compensator comprising: a biocompatible material; a first component; and a second component; wherein the first component and second component form a reaction product to expand the tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the first component comprises a hydrophilic material embedded in the biocompatible material and the second component is a bodily fluid. 3. An article selected from an anvil of a stapling apparatus and a staple cartridge for a stapling apparatus, the article comprising: a tissue thickness compensator comprising: a biocompatible material; a first component; and a second component; wherein the first component and second component form a reaction product to expand the tissue thickness compensator, wherein the tissue thickness compensator comprises a first encapsulated component comprising the first component and a second encapsulated component comprising the second component, and wherein the first encapsulated component is configured to release the first component when the first encapsulated component is ruptured, and the second encapsulated component is configured to release the second component when the second encapsulated component is ruptured. 4. An article selected from an anvil of a stapling apparatus and a staple cartridge for a stapling apparatus, the article comprising: a tissue thickness compensator comprising: a biocompatible material; a first component; and a second component; wherein the first component and second component form a reaction product to expand the tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the reaction product is formed in situ by contacting the first component and the second component. 5. An article selected from an anvil of a stapling apparatus and a staple cartridge for a stapling apparatus, the article comprising: a tissue thickness compensator comprising: a biocompatible material; a first component; and a second component; wherein the first component and second component form a reaction product to expand the tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the first component comprises a first hydrogel precursor, the second component comprises a second hydrogel precursor, and the reaction product comprises a hydrogel.
