What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating an article of footwear or of sports equipment with a color change portion, the method comprising: measuring a performance parameter; coloring the color change portion with a first color when the performance parameter is in a first range of values; coloring the color change portion with a second color when the performance parameter is in a second range of values, the second range of values being substantially different from the first range of values and the second color being substantially different from the first color; wherein the color change portion comprises an electrochromographic material comprising a photonic lattice. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color change portion comprising the electrochromographic material comprises a composite material comprising the photonic lattice. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the photonic lattice includes a cross-linked polymeric network having an electronic configuration. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the method further comprises controlling the electronic configuration of the polymeric network. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color change portion includes infrared radiation. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color change portion includes ultraviolet radiation. 7. A method of operating an article of footwear or of sports equipment with a color change portion, the method comprising: receiving a user-selected color; applying an electrical signal to an electrochromographic material associated with the color change portion, thereby changing the color change portion from an initial color to the user-selected color, the initial color being different from the user-selected color; wherein the electrochromographic material comprises a photonic lattice. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the color change portion comprising the electrochromographic material comprises a composite material comprising the photonic lattice. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the photonic lattice includes a cross-linked polymeric network having an electronic configuration. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises controlling the electronic configuration of the polymeric network. 11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the user-selected color includes infrared radiation. 12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the user-selected color includes ultraviolet radiation. 13. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the electrochromographic material comprises two or more independently electrically addressable composite materials comprising a photonic lattice. 14. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the electrochromographic material displays a multi-colored visual image upon application of the electrical signal. 15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the multi-colored visual image is a still image or an animated image. 16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the electrochromographic material comprises two or more composite materials comprising a photonic lattice that are not independently electrically addressable. 17. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the electrochromographic material is shaped into a three-dimensional conformation. 18. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the color change portion comprises an entire upper of the article of footwear. 19. A method of operating an article of footwear or of sports equipment with a color change portion, the method comprising: receiving information related to a first color of an object, the object being associated with a user of the article of footwear or of the sports equipment; determining a second color for the color change portion according to the first color; applying an electrical signal to an electrochromographic material associated with the color change portion, thereby changing the color change portion to the second color; wherein the electrochromographic material comprises a photonic lattice. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the color change portion comprising the electrochromographic material comprises a composite material comprising the photonic lattice. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the photonic lattice includes a cross-linked polymeric network having an electronic configuration. 22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the method further comprises controlling the electronic configuration of the polymeric network. 23. An apparatus that changes color in response to electrical stimulation comprising, in order: a first terminal layer; a first conductive layer in electrical contact with the first terminal layer; a photonic lattice layer in electrical contact with the first conductive layer; a second conductive layer in electrical contact with the photonic lattice layer; and a second terminal layer in electrical contact with the second conductive layer. 24. The apparatus according to claim 23 , further comprising a substrate layer in contact with the first terminal layer and a protective layer in contact with the second terminal layer. 25. The apparatus according to claim 23 , wherein at two layers are bonded or fused together. 26. An apparatus that changes color in response to electrical stimulation comprising, in order: a terminal layer comprising a first terminal and a second terminal interdigitated; a conductive layer in electrical contact with one side of the terminal layer; and a photonic lattice layer in electrical contact with the opposite side of the conductive layer. 27. The apparatus according to claim 26 , further comprising a substrate layer in contact with the side of the terminal layer opposite the conductive layer and a protective layer in contact with the photonic lattice layer. 28. An article of footwear having the apparatus of claim 23 on the outer surface thereof. 29. An article of footwear having an outermost layer having an aperture therein and having an apparatus of claim 23 mounted in the aperture so that the apparatus and the aperture are essentially coextensive. 30. An article of footwear having an outermost layer having an aperture therein and having an apparatus of claim 23 mounted in the aperture, the aperture being smaller than the apparatus.
