Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system according to one embodiment includes a carrier for receiving a module; a transport mechanism for running a tape across a tape bearing surface of the module; and a measuring device for measuring an extent of wear of a coating on a tape bearing surface of the module. A module according to one embodiment includes a body having a tape bearing surface, the body having an approximate tape bearing surface profile and dimensions as a module of interest; and a coating on the tape bearing surface. A method according to one embodiment includes measuring an initial coating thickness on a tape bearing surface of a module in a carrier; running a tape across the tape bearing surface; and at intervals, measuring a residual thickness of the coating.

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a carrier for receiving a module; a transport mechanism for running a tape across a tape bearing surface of the module; and a measuring device for measuring an extent of wear of a coating on the tape bearing surface of the module, wherein the measuring device includes an ellipsometer; wherein the coating includes a bulk material and one or more sections of a second material at predetermined positions relative to the bulk material, wherein the measuring device is configured and/or positioned to allow measuring an extent of differential wear of the bulk material and the second material; and logic configured to cause a processor to determine the extent of differential wear of the bulk material and the second material based on the measuring. 2. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the carrier and measuring device are configured and/or positioned to allow measuring the extent of wear of the coating without removing the module from the carrier. 3. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the measuring device is configured to measure an initial thickness of the coating as a reference gauge for the measuring. 4. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the measuring device includes a stylus profiler. 5. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the measuring device is configured to use at least one area of the tape bearing surface not contacted by the tape as a reference gauge for the measuring. 6. A system as recited in claim 4 , comprising a processor and logic integrated with and/or executable by the processor to capture an overall profile of the tape bearing surface of the module created by running the tape across the tape bearing surface using measurements taken by the stylus profiler. 7. A system as recited in claim 1 , comprising the module, wherein the coating has a similar coefficient of friction as a module of interest. 8. A system as recited in claim 7 , wherein the coating has a deposition thickness of at least about 10 nanometers. 9. A system as recited in claim 1 , comprising the module, wherein the coating is primarily polycrystalline alumina. 10. A system as recited in claim 1 , comprising the module. 11. A system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the module is an operative module for a tape head. 12. A system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the module is nonfunctional. 13. A system as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a stylus for taking stylus profile measurements. 14. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the bulk material is alumina. 15. A system as recited in claim 14 , wherein the second material is a different material than alumina. 16. A system as recited in claim 14 , wherein the second material is selected from a group consisting of aluminum-iron-silicon and Sendust. 17. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the measuring device is configured and/or positioned to allow measuring the extent of differential wear of the bulk material and the second material without removing the module from the carrier. 18. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the module is part of a completed head assembly, the completed head assembly being received in the carrier. 19. A system as recited in claim 1 , comprising logic configured to cause a portion or all of the coating previously below the running tape to become exposed to enable the measuring device to perform the measuring.
