Wound dressings and wound inserts comprising a porous film layer and at least a channel, wound inserts of forming wound inserts comprising a porous film layer and at least a channel, and wound-treatment wound inserts.

First claim

We claim: 1. A method of manufacturing a wound insert comprising: obtaining an open-celled reticulated foam member having a first surface, a second surface, and a thickness between the first and the second surface; felting the first surface of the foam member to form a felted layer; and removing a portion of the felted layer from the first surface to form at least one channel in the felted layer, the at least one channel being configured to communicate fluid from a wound and to deliver fluid to the wound. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one channel is in fluid communication with the second surface through the thickness. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein felting further comprises applying heat and pressure to the foam member. 4. A wound insert comprising: an open-celled reticulated foam member comprising: a first surface and a second surface, the first surface comprising a porous film layer configured to allow passage of negative pressure to a wound site and to inhibit tissue ingrowth; a thickness between the first and the second surface; the porous film layer comprising a film thickness; and at least one channel formed in the porous film layer and comprising a channel depth equal to or greater than the film thickness. 5. The wound insert of claim 4 , wherein the foam member and the porous film layer each comprise pores, and wherein the pores in the porous film layer are substantially smaller than the pores in the foam member. 6. The wound insert of claim 4 , wherein the wound insert is configured to be disposed between a wound of a patient and a drape coupled to skin adjacent to the wound. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein felting the first surface comprises: obtaining a platen press comprising a first platen and a second platen; heating the first platen to a first temperature; placing the foam member in the platen press such that the first surface faces the first platen and the second surface faces the second platen; and compressing the foam member to a compressed thickness for a compression time. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein felting the first surface forms a porous film layer on the first surface of the foam member, the porous film layer being configured to allow the passage of negative pressure and to inhibit tissue ingrowth. 9. A method of manufacturing a wound insert, comprising: felting a surface of an open-celled reticulated foam member to form a felted layer extending into the foam member from the surface; and removing a portion of the felted layer from the surface to form at least one channel in the felted layer. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the surface of the foam member is a first surface, and wherein the method further comprises felting a second surface of the foam member. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of felting is performed by compressing the foam member and heating the surface. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one channel has a depth substantially equal to a depth of the felted layer. 13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one channel has a depth greater than a depth of the felted layer. 14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one channel is formed by cutting to remove material from the felted layer. 15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one channel is formed by molding. 16. The wound insert of claim 4 , the at least one channel defined by material removed from the porous film layer.
