The present invention relates to cleaning compositions comprising variants of an alpha-amylase and methods of treating surfaces such as textiles with aqueous liquor comprising such compositions, especially at low temperatures.

What is claimed is: 1. A cleaning composition comprising: (a) a variant of a parent alpha-amylase comprising an amino acid substitution selected from the group consisting of E260G, E260H, E260I, E260K, E260R, E260T, and E260Y at a position corresponding to position E260 of the mature polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:1 and further comprising an amino acid sequence alteration at one or more positions corresponding to positions D134, W140, W189, F262, W284, G304, W347, W439, W469, G476, and G477 of the mature polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:1, wherein each alteration is independently an amino acid substitution, deletion or insertion, and wherein the variant has at least 80%, but less than 100% sequence identity with the mature polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:1, and wherein the variant has alpha-amylase activity; and (b) a cleaning adjunct in an amount from 0.01 to 99.9 wt %. 2. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the further amino acid sequence alteration is a substitution. 3. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant comprises substitutions at three positions selected from the group consisting of G304, W140, W189, D134, E260, F262, W284, W347, W439, W469, G476, and G477. 4. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant comprises substitutions at four positions selected from the group consisting of G304, W140, W189, D134, E260, F262, W284, W347, W439, W469, G476, and G477. 5. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant comprises substitutions at two, three or four positions selected from the group consisting of G304, W140, E260 and G476. 6. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant comprises a substitution selected from the group consisting of E260G, E260H, E260I, E260K, E260R, E260T, and E260Y and further comprises one or more substitutions selected from the group consisting of G304R, W140Y, W140F, W189E, W189G, W189T, D134E, W284D, W284F, W284R, W439R, W439G, G476E, G476K, G477E, G477K, G477M, and G477R. 7. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant comprises a substitution selected from the group consisting of E260G, E260H, E260I, E260K, E260R, E260T, and E260Y and further comprises substitutions at one, two, or three positions selected from the group consisting of G304R, W140Y, W140F, G476E, and G476K. 8. A composition according to claim 7 , wherein the substitutions are selected from the group consisting of G304R, W140Y, E260G and G476K. 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the variant further comprises one or more substitutions selected from the group consisting of N195F, V206Y, Y243F, G109A, G273D, G273V, G337N, K72R, R181H, S303G and Y100I. 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the number of alterations in the variant is from 2 to 10. 11. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the variant alpha-amylase has at least 87%, but less than 100%, sequence identity with the mature polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:1. 12.
