Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A multilayer evacuated blood collection tube is provided having a first tube layer, and a second tube layer formed on the first tube layer and a closure, the second tube layer being a nanocomposite barrier layer. Such containers include but are not limited to blood collection tubes, evacuated blood collection tubes, centrifuge tubes, culture bottles, and syringe barrels.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A multilayer evacuated blood collection tube comprising: an open-ended tube structure having a top edge, the open-ended tube structure comprising an inner polymeric skin layer, an outer polymeric skin layer, and a polymeric core layer wherein the core layer is formed from a polymeric material selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyester, and the skin layers comprise a composite formed from polyester and montmorrillonite, said inner and outer polymeric skin layers and polymeric core layer being co-injected to form the tube structure free from fluid passageways located therebetween, wherein the core layer is non-compatible with the inner and outer skin layers and wherein the inner and outer polymeric skin layers encapsulate the core layer and the top edge has a cross-section of only the inner and outer skin layers to physically restrain the core layer from delamination from the inner and outer skin layers. 2. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , wherein said polyester which forms said inner and outer skin layers is polyethylene terephthalate. 3. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , wherein said polyester which forms said inner and outer skin layers is polyethylene naphthalate. 4. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , wherein said open-ended tube structure has a gas transmission rate less than 1.0 [cm 3 mil/100 in 2 ·24 hr·atm] (23° C. O % RH) for nitrogen and less than 15 [cm 3 mil/100 in 2 ·24 hr·atm] (23° C. O % RH) for oxygen. 5. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , wherein said open-ended tube structure has a liquid vapor transmission rate less than 1.0 [g mil/100 in 2 ·24 hr] (@40° C. 90% RH). 6. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , further comprising an additive within said tube interior. 7. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 6 , wherein said additive is a procoagulant or an anticoagulant. 8. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 7 , wherein said procoagulant is at least one material selected from the group consisting of silica, elagic acid, fibrinogen and thrombin. 9. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 7 , wherein said anticoagulant is at least one material selected from the group consisting of an oxalate, a citrate, EDTA, and heparin. 10. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 9 , wherein said anticoagulant is a citrate and said core layer is polypropylene. 11. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , further comprising a separator. 12. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 11 , wherein said separator is in a mechanical or non-mechanical form. 13. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 12 , wherein said non-mechanical form of said separator is a thixotropic gel. 14. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 , wherein said tube interior is sterilized. 15. A multilayer evacuated blood collection tube comprising: an open-ended tube structure having a top edge, the open-ended tube structure comprising: a first tube layer; a second tube layer; a third tube layer, said first, second, and third tube layers being co-injected to form the tube structure wherein the first, second, and third tube layers are flush with respect to one another and wherein said first tube layer is formed from a material that is non-compatible with the second and third tube layers and is encapsulated by the second and third tube layers and the top edge has a cross-section of only the second and third tube layers to physically restrain the first layer from delamination from the second and third tube layers; and a closure adapted to fit said open end of said tube structure to define a tube interior, wherein the interior of the tube is evacuated. 16. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 15 , wherein the first tube layer is formed from a polymeric material selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyester and the second tube layer and third tube layer comprise a nanocomposite barrier layer formed from polyester and montmorrillonite. 17. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 1 further comprising a closure adapted to fit said open end of said tube structure, wherein said inner skin layer and said closure define a tube interior and wherein the tube interior is evacuated. 18. The multilayer evacuated blood collection tube of claim 17 , wherein said closure comprises: a top wall defining a cavity; a skirt having an inside wall surface defining a well; and a septum separating the well and the cavity, wherein said septum is capable of penetration by a cannula.
