Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A shaft for a balloon dilation catheter comprises a proximal portion wherein a guidewire tubular member is disposed coaxially within an outer tubular member, a shaft transitional portion, wherein the guidewire member is disposed within the outer member, with at least one distal tubular member not present in the proximal portion, a shaft distal portion, wherein the guidewire member and the distal members are disposed side-by-side and encased within a distal body, and fluid-tight barrier within a proximal lumen blocking the flow of fluid in the proximal lumen, but allowing the proximal lumen to remain in fluid communication with a distal lumens.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A catheter comprising: an elongated catheter shaft with a proximal portion and a distal end, said catheter shaft including a first lumen and a second lumen each extending through the proximal portion and the distal end of the catheter shaft; and a balloon distal to the distal end of the catheter shaft; wherein the first lumen is positioned within the second lumen in the proximal portion of the catheter shaft, and the first lumen is positioned external to the second lumen at the distal end of the catheter shaft; wherein the second lumen includes multiple branches at the distal end of the catheter shaft; and wherein the catheter shaft includes a circular cross-section from the proximal portion to the distal end. 2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first lumen is coaxial with the second lumen in the proximal portion of the catheter shaft. 3. The catheter of claim 1 , further including a transition portion between the proximal portion and the distal end, wherein the first lumen transfers from within the second lumen to a position external to the second lumen within the transition portion. 4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first lumen is a guidewire lumen. 5. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second lumen is an inflation/deflation lumen. 6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the catheter shaft is at least partially radiopaque. 7. A catheter comprising: an elongated catheter shaft with a proximal portion and a distal end; a first tubular member defining a first lumen extending from the proximal portion to the distal end of the catheter shaft; a second tubular member in the proximal portion of the catheter shaft at least partially defining a second lumen; and a plurality of third tubular members extending to the distal end of the catheter shaft and at least partially defining the second lumen; wherein the first tubular member is positioned within the second lumen in the proximal portion of the catheter shaft and external to the second lumen at the distal end of the catheter shaft. 8. The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the first lumen comprises a guidewire lumen. 9. The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the second lumen comprises an inflation/deflation lumen. 10. The catheter of claim 7 , further comprising a balloon attached to the distal end of the catheter shaft. 11. The catheter of claim 7 , further comprising a fluid-tight barrier for selectively diverting fluid between the second tubular member and the at least one third tubular member through the second lumen. 12. A catheter shaft with a proximal portion and a distal end, said catheter shaft for use in inflating a balloon distal to the distal end of the catheter shaft, the catheter shaft comprising: a guidewire tube defining a guidewire lumen extending from the proximal portion to the distal end; inflation tubing extending from the proximal portion to the distal end; and an elongated outer tube housing the guidewire tube and the inflation tubing; wherein the guidewire tube transitions from within the inflation tubing in the proximal portion of the catheter shaft to a position external to the inflation tubing at the distal end of the catheter shaft; and wherein the inflation tubing transitions from a single lumen configuration in the proximal portion to a multiple branch configuration at the distal end. 13. The catheter shaft of claim 12 , wherein the inflation tubing transitions from a single first tube in the proximal portion to a plurality of second tubes at the distal end, and wherein the first tube is in fluid communication with the plurality of second tubes. 14. The catheter shaft of claim 13 , further including a distal body encasing the plurality of second tubes and a distal portion of the guidewire tube. 15. The catheter shaft of claim 12 , wherein the catheter shaft is more flexible at the distal end than in the proximal portion. 16. The catheter shaft of claim 12 , further including a balloon attached to the distal end of the catheter shaft. 17. The catheter shaft of claim 12 , further including a fluid-tight barrier at a position in the catheter shaft wherein the guidewire tube transitions from within the inflation tubing to the position external to the inflation tubing. 18. The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the catheter shaft includes a circular cross section from the proximal portion to the distal end. 19. The catheter of claim 18 , wherein the catheter shaft includes an outer diameter that is substantially constant. 20. The catheter of claim 12 , wherein the multiple branch configuration of the inflation lumen extends into the balloon.
