Described is system and method for detecting anomalous channels in an optoacoustic imaging system in which transducer elements are acoustically coupled with a portion of the surface of a volume of tissue and a pulse of light is directed onto an area of the surface, the pulse imparting less than a predetermined fluence upon the surface. A sinogram is recorded by sampling transducers acoustically coupled with the surface of the volume for a predetermined period of time after the pulse of light to record data reflecting the optoacoustic response of the volume of tissue to the pulse, the samples for each transducer corresponding to a channel. The sinogram is analyzed for the presence of one or more anomalous channels, and the sinogram samples corresponding with the anomalous channels are modified to reduce the affect of the anomalous channel on an image reconstructed from the sinogram.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising the steps of: acoustically coupling a plurality of transducers with a portion of a surface of a volume of tissue; directing a pulse of light onto an area of the surface of the volume of tissue, the pulse imparting less than a predetermined fluence upon the surface; recording a sinogram by sampling the plurality of transducers acoustically coupled with the surface of the volume for a predetermined period of time after the pulse of light to record data reflecting the optoacoustic response of the volume of tissue to the pulse, the samples for each transducer corresponding to a channel; analyzing the sinogram for the presence of one or more anomalous channels by: for each channel, determining a channel average for a first group of samples; determining an average of the channel averages; and identifying as anomalous each channel having a channel average that is an outlier when compared with the average of the channel averages; modifying the sinogram samples corresponding with the one or more anomalous channels to reduce the effect of the anomalous channel on an image reconstructed from the sinogram. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein an outlier is a statistical outlier. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein a statistical outlier is determined by using the average of the channel averages less a weighted standard deviation of the channel averages as a threshold. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of modifying is performed by zeroing the samples corresponding with the one or more anomalous channels. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of transducers are generally oriented on an imaginary plane traveling through their centers with respect to each other, and a first transducer and a last transducer are the two outermost transducers of the plurality of transducers, the first transducer and the last transducer corresponding to a first channel and a last channel; and wherein the step of modifying is performed by: if the channel is the first or last channel, replacing samples corresponding with the one or more anomalous channels with the corresponding samples from an adjacent channel; or if the channel is not the first or last channel, replacing samples corresponding with the one or more anomalous channels with the average of the corresponding samples from each anomalous channel's adjacent channels. 6. An optoacoustic system comprising: light source for generating a pulse of light; probe comprising a plurality of transducer elements adapted for coupling with a portion of a surface of a volume of tissue and at least one optical window, each of the transducer elements corresponding to a channel; light path for directing at least a portion of the pulse of light to the at least one optical window; sensor for detecting a pulse of light being output from the light source; analog to digital converter for sampling information corresponding to each channel during a predetermined period of time after the sensor detects the pulse of light, wherein data reflecting the sampled output comprise a plurality of samples for each channel; analyzer sub-system configured to analyze the data for presence of one or more anomalous channels by identifying as anomalous a channel having a channel average that is an outlier when compared with an average of channel averages; memory for storing a record identifying the one or more anomalous channels. 7.
