Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An electrically heated aerosol-generating system for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate includes a heating element including a first electrically conductive element electrically insulated from a second electrically conductive element by an electrically insulating portion. The first and second elements are elongate and are electrically connected to each other by an electrically resistive portion. At least one electrically conductive element and the electrically resistive portion are arranged such that they are at least partially in contact with the aerosol-forming substrate.

We claim: 1. A heating element for heating an aerosol-forming substrate in an electrically heated aerosol-generating system, the heating element comprising: a first electrically conductive element electrically insulated from a second electrically conductive element by an electrically insulating portion therebetween, the first and second electrically conductive elements being elongate and being electrically connected to each other by an electrically resistive portion. 2. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is adapted to be inserted into the aerosol-forming substrate, the first electrically conductive element comprises copper wire, and the second electrically conductive element comprises tubing of stainless steel, a titanium based alloy or a nickel based alloy. 3. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the electrically resistive portion is located at a free end of the heating element. 4. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the electrically resistive portion is spaced from a free end of the heating element. 5. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the electrically resistive portion comprises a first electrically resistive portion located at a free end of the heating element and a second electrically resistive portion spaced from the free end of the heating element. 6. The heating element of claim 1 , further comprising: a holder; a first end of the heating element forming a heating portion exposed outside the holder and a second end of the heating element forming a mounting portion mounted in the holder; and a connection adapted to connect the mounting portion to a power supply, wherein the first and second electrically conductive elements and the electrically resistive portion form a pin heater. 7. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the first electrically conductive element comprises copper wire, and the second electrically conductive element comprises tubing of stainless steel, a titanium based alloy or a nickel based alloy. 8. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the second electrically conductive element is electrically conductive tubing, the electrically conductive tubing at least partially surrounding the first electrically conductive element. 9. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the electrically insulating portion is an electrically insulating plug. 10. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the electrically insulating portion at least partially surrounds one end of the first electrically conductive element. 11. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the second electrically conductive element is shorter in length than the first electrically conductive element. 12. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the first electrically conductive element and the second electrically conductive element are substantially parallel. 13. An electrically heated aerosol-generating system for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate, the system comprising a housing containing the heating element of claim 1 . 14. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 13 , wherein one end of at least one of the first and second electrically conductive elements forms a mounting portion of the heating element. 15. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 13 , further including a sensor to detect air flow indicative of a user taking a puff. 16. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 13 , wherein the heating element is adapted to be inserted into the aerosol-forming substrate. 17. An electrically heated aerosol-generating system comprising a housing containing at least one heater for heating a substrate to form an aerosol, the heater comprising: a holder; a heating element including a first electrically conductive element electrically insulated from a second electrically conductive element by an electrically insulating portion, the first and second electrically conductive elements being elongate and being electrically connected to each other by an electrically resistive portion therebetween, wherein the first and second electrically conductive elements and the electrically resistive portion are adapted to heat an aerosol-forming substrate; a first end of the heating element forming a heating portion being exposed outside the holder and a second end of the heating element forming a mounting portion being mounted in the holder; and a connection for connecting the mounting portion of each heating element to a power supply to supply electric current through the first and second electrically conductive elements. 18. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 17 , wherein the heating element is adapted to be inserted into the aerosol-forming substrate, the first electrically conductive element comprises copper wire, and the second electrically conductive element comprises tubing of stainless steel, a titanium based alloy or a nickel based alloy. 19. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 17 , wherein: (a) the housing includes a plurality of heating elements mounted on a holder, (b) the electrically resistive portion resistively heats to a temperature of about 250° C. to about 800° C., (c) the aerosol-forming substrate includes tobacco-containing material and aerosol formers, and/or (d) the heating element heats a middle portion of the aerosol-forming substrate. 20. The electrically heated aerosol-generating system of claim 17 , wherein: (a) the electrically resistive portion is located at a free end of the heating element; (b) the electrically resistive portion is spaced from a free end of the heating element or (c) the electrically resistive portion comprises a first electrically resistive portion located at a free end of the heating element and a second electrically resistive portion spaced from the free end of the heating element.
