Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Targeted content may be provided to a designated set of one or more interconnected resources. Programmatic operations are executed using resources that are private to the one or more interconnected devices. The operations, when executed, cause or result in (i) monitoring activities of one or more users of the designated set; (ii) developing profile information of the one or more users, where the profile information is based at least partially on information determined from monitoring activities of the one or more users; (iii) generating, from the profile information, a set of coded data that represent selection criteria; and (iv) communicating the set of coded data to a programmatic source external to the system, where the represented selection criteria enables programmatic selection of content resources from a content library for the system.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for providing content, the method being implemented by one or more processors and comprising: monitoring activities of a user on multiple interconnected devices that form a personal network, the multiple interconnected devices including a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type; determining profile information for the user from monitoring the activities of the user on the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network; storing the profile information; performing one or more operations to select a set of content items for the user based on the profile information; and distributing content that is based on the set of content items, the content being distributed from at least the first device across one or more networks to at least the second device of the personal network; wherein at least monitoring the activities of the user, determining the profile information, storing the profile information, and performing the one or more operations are performed privately on one or more of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network, so that the profile information is not communicated outside of the personal network of the user. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a collection of content items from a source external to the personal network, and wherein performing the one or more operations includes selecting, on one or more of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network, the set of content items from the collection of content items. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the one or more operations includes: determining selection criteria from the profile information, and communicating the selection criteria to a source external to the personal network in order to receive the set of content items. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein distributing the content includes distributing advertisements. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein distributing the content includes selecting content for one or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network based at least in part on a type of a corresponding content item received from an external source. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein distributing the content includes configuring the content for each of the one or more devices based at least in part on a capability of that device. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein configuring the content includes configuring the content based on a platform type of each of the one or more devices. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring the activities of the user includes monitoring each of a media rendering activity and a media purchase or download activity on two or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring the activities of the user includes monitoring a messaging activity on one or more messaging resources provided by one or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first device or second device corresponds to a roaming device. 11. A computer system comprising: a memory that stores a set of instructions; one or more processors provided on one or more devices of multiple interconnected devices that form a personal network of a user, the multiple interconnected devices including a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type the one or more processors using instructions in the set of instructions to: monitor activities of the user on the multiple interconnected devices that form the personal network; determine profile information for the user from monitoring the activities of the user on the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network; store the profile information; perform one or more operations to select a set of content items for the user based on the profile information; and distribute content that is based on the set of content items, the content being distributed from at least the first device across one or more networks to at least the second device of the personal network; wherein the one or more processors perform at least monitoring the activities of the user, determining the profile information, storing the profile information, and performing the one or more operations privately on the one or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network, so that the profile information is not communicated outside of the personal network of the user. 12. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors process a collection of content items that are provided by a source external to the personal network, and wherein the one or more processors perform one or more operations to select the set of content items by selecting, on one or more of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network, the set of content items from the collection of content items. 13. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors perform one or more operations to select the set of content items by: determining selection criteria from the profile information, and communicating the selection criteria to a source external to the personal network in order to receive the set of content items. 14. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors distribute content that includes advertisements. 15. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors distribute content that is based on the set of content items by selecting content for one or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network based at least in part on a type of a corresponding content item received from an external source. 16. The computer system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processor distribute content that is based on the set of content items by configuring the content for each of the one or more devices based at least in part on a capability of that device. 17. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more processors distribute content that is based on the set of content items by configuring the content based on a platform type of each of the one or more devices. 18. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors monitor activities of the user by monitoring each of a media rendering activity and a media purchase or download activity on two or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network. 19. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors monitor activities of the user by monitoring a messaging activity on one or more messaging resources provided by one or more devices of the multiple interconnected devices of the personal network. 20. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first device or second device corresponds to a roaming device. 21. A non-transitory computer-readable medium that stores instructions, that when executed by one or more processors of one or more devices of a personal network, cause the one or more devices to perform operations that comprise: monitoring activities of a user on multiple interconnected devices of the personal network, the multiple interconnected devices including a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type; determining profile information for the user from monitoring the activities of the user on the multiple interconnected devices
