Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A contact printing system comprising a gravure cylinder having first, second, and third pluralities of discrete cells disposed in a respective first, second, and third distribution upon the outer surface of the gravure cylinder is disclosed. The first, second, and third pluralities of discrete cells each receives a respective first, second, and third portion of a respective first, second, and third fluid from a respective first, second, and third at least one channel disposed internal to the gravure cylinder. The first, second, and third at least one channels each have a single entry point at the respective first, second, and third positions external to the gravure cylinder and a discrete exit point at the respective first, second, and third plurality of discrete cells. The first, second, and third plurality of discrete cells are disposed adjacent each other and are randomly distributed upon the outer surface of the gravure cylinder.

What is claimed is: 1. A contact printing system comprising: a gravure cylinder; said gravure cylinder having a first plurality of discrete cells disposed in a first distribution upon an outer surface of said gravure cylinder; said gravure cylinder having a second plurality of discrete cells disposed in a second distribution upon said outer surface of said gravure cylinder; said gravure cylinder having a third plurality of discrete cells disposed in a third distribution upon said outer surface of said gravure cylinder; said first plurality of discrete cells receiving a first portion of a first fluid from a first at least one channel disposed internal to said gravure cylinder and extending from a first position external to said gravure cylinder to said first plurality of discrete cells; said second plurality of discrete cells receiving a first portion of a second fluid from a second at least one channel disposed internal to said gravure cylinder and extending from a second position external to said gravure cylinder to said second plurality of discrete cells; said third plurality of discrete cells receiving a first portion of a third fluid from a third at least one channel disposed internal to said gravure cylinder and extending from a third position external to said gravure cylinder to said third plurality of discrete cells; said first, second, and third at least one channels each having a single entry point at said respective first, second, and third positions external to said gravure cylinder and a discrete exit point at said respective first, second, and third plurality of discrete cells; and, wherein said first, second, and third plurality of discrete cells are disposed adjacent each other and are interspersed amongst each other upon said outer surface of said gravure cylinder. 2. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first, second, and third pluralities of discrete cells disposed upon said outer surface of said gravure cylinder are arranged in an array. 3. The contact printing system of claim 2 wherein said array is a pattern. 4. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said gravure cylinder is formed such that said gravure cylinder has a unibody construction. 5. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first, second, and third fluids are fluidly communicateable from said outer surface of said gravure cylinder to a web substrate when said web substrate is in contacting engagement with said outer surface of said gravure cylinder. 6. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of discrete cells are arranged in a first array and a second plurality of discrete cells are arranged in a second array. 7. The contact printing system of claim 6 wherein said first array is a first pattern and said second array is a second pattern, said first and second patterns being different. 8. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of discrete cells receives said first fluid at a first pressure from said first at least one channel. 9. The contact printing system of claim 8 wherein said second plurality of discrete cells receives said second fluid at a second pressure from said second at least one channel, said first and second pressures being different. 10. The contact printing system of claim 9 wherein said third plurality of discrete cells receives said third fluid at a third pressure from said third at least one channel, said first, second, and third pressures being different. 11. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of discrete cells has an aspect ratio of at least about 25:1. 12. The contact printing system of claim 11 wherein said first plurality of discrete cells has an aspect ratio of at least about 60:1. 13. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein each cell of said first plurality of discrete cells is capable of receiving said first fluid, said first fluid being a first combination of at least two primary fluids. 14. The contact printing system of claim 13 wherein each cell of said second plurality of discrete cells is capable of receiving said second fluid, said second fluid being a second combination of said at least two primary fluids. 15. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of cells provide a halftoning of greater than about 20 dpi print resolution. 16. The contact printing system of claim 1 wherein said contact printing system comprises X−Y printing components where X and Y are whole numbers, 0<Y<X, and X>1.
