Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device for crimping a radially expandable and collapsible prosthetic valve comprises a coiled wire frame having a longitudinal opening extending from a proximal end to a distal end thereof. The opening has a first state and a second state, the opening in the first state having a first diameter dimensioned to receive the prosthetic valve in an expanded or partially crimped configuration therein, and the opening in the second state having a second diameter dimensioned to receive the prosthetic valve in a crimped configuration. The coiled wire frame has a first end coupled to a first member and a second end coupled to a second member. The first member is movable relative to the second member to convert the coiled wire frame from the first state to the second state.

We claim: 1. An assembly comprising: a radially expandable and compressible prosthetic valve; a delivery catheter comprising a handle and an elongated shaft coupled to the handle; and a crimping device mounted on the shaft of the delivery catheter, the crimping device comprising a holding mechanism configured to releasably grip the shaft, thereby maintaining the position of the crimping device relative to the shaft, the crimping device being configured to reduce the diameter of the prosthetic valve to a delivery configuration; wherein the prosthetic valve is contained within the crimping device. 2. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a sterile package containing the delivery catheter, the crimping device and the prosthetic valve. 3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the prosthetic valve is pre-assembled in a partially crimped configuration within the crimping device and within the sterile package. 4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the holding mechanism comprises a plurality of clamping jaws configured to exert a clamping force against an outer surface of the shaft of the delivery catheter to maintain the position of the crimping device relative to the shaft. 5. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of clamping jaws comprise a pair of clamping jaws positioned on opposite sides of the shaft of the delivery catheter. 6. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the clamping jaws are pivotable toward and away from the outer surface of the shaft of the delivery catheter. 7. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the clamping jaws are biased toward a clamping position against the outer surface of the shaft of the delivery catheter. 8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the holding mechanism further comprises a spring that exerts a biasing force on the clamping jaws to bias the jaws to the clamping position. 9. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the crimping device comprises a rotatable knob, which when rotated, causes the crimping device to crimp the prosthetic valve to the delivery configuration. 10. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the crimping device is configured such that further rotation of the rotatable knob after crimping the prosthetic valve is effective to cause the holding mechanism to release the shaft of the delivery catheter to permit axial movement of the shaft relative to the crimping device. 11. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an elongated tube connected to the crimping device adjacent an opening of the crimping device, wherein the prosthetic valve, after being crimped to the delivery configuration, can be moved from the crimping device into the elongated tube. 12. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the prosthetic valve is sealed within the sterile package in a dry state. 13. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the prosthetic valve is sealed within the sterile package in a wet state. 14. A method for crimping a prosthetic valve contained in a crimping device that is releasably mounted on a shaft of a delivery catheter, the method comprising: operating the crimping device to crimp the prosthetic valve to a delivery configuration onto the delivery catheter, wherein a holding mechanism of the crimping device maintains the position of the crimping device along the shaft while the prosthetic valve is crimped; and releasing the crimping device from the shaft to permit axial movement of the prosthetic valve and the delivery catheter relative to the crimping device. 15. A method for crimping a prosthetic valve contained in a crimping device that is releasably mounted on a shaft of a delivery catheter, the method comprising: operating the crimping device to crimp the prosthetic valve to a delivery configuration onto the delivery catheter, wherein the crimping device comprises a plurality of clamping jaws that exert a clamping force against an outer surface of the shaft of the delivery catheter to maintain the position of the crimping device relative to the shaft while the prosthetic valve is crimped; and releasing the crimping device from the shaft to permit axial movement of the prosthetic valve and the delivery catheter relative to the crimping device, wherein releasing the crimping device from the shaft comprises moving the clamping jaws away from the shaft. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein: operating the crimping device to crimp the prosthetic valve comprises rotating a knob of the crimping device; and releasing the crimping device from the shaft comprises further rotating the knob to cause the clamping jaws to move away from the shaft. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: after releasing the crimping device from the shaft, moving the delivery catheter relative to the crimping device to move the crimped prosthetic valve from the crimping device into an elongated tube. 18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: prior to operating the crimping device to crimp the prosthetic valve, removing the prosthetic valve, the crimping device, and the delivery catheter from a sterile package. 19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the prosthetic valve is plastically expandable. 20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the prosthetic valve is self-expandable.
