The invention claimed is: 1. A method of providing a bonus game on a personal electronic device that is in a qualifying physical location comprising: linking an electronic gaming machine to a personal electronic device having a location sensor via an electronic communication channel; informing a player on a display device of the personal electronic device of player actions in a game on the electronic gaming machine that qualify the player for a bonus award; receiving a physical item from the player at the electronic gaming machine via at least one of a bill acceptor, a ticket acceptor, and a coin acceptor operatively connected to the electronic gaming machine in order to establish a credit balance for placing wagers on the game; monitoring events generated by the game played by the player on the electronic gaming machine, including displaying on the electronic gaming machine a combination of symbols selected from among a plurality of symbols having at least one predefined symbol combination that results in an award to the player based on a paytable; monitoring events generated by the player on the game played on the electronic gaming machine, including receiving a wager at the electronic gaming machine from the credit balance and receiving a game initiating input via the electronic gaming machine; determining the physical location of the personal electronic device via the location sensor; communicating the monitored events to the personal electronic device via the communication channel; only if the determined physical location is a qualifying physical location: informing the player via the display device of the personal electronic device of a trade of at least one of the displayed symbols for at least one symbol that would qualify the player for the bonus award, wherein the bonus award is an improvement to the paytable; receiving an input from the player at the electronic gaming machine that completes the trade in the game; if the player actions qualify the player for the bonus award, notifying the player of the bonus award on the display device on the personal electronic device; paying out any award by crediting the credit balance; and receiving a second input via a cashout button, which initiates a payout from the credit balance. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising identifying the personal electronic device via a unique identifier associated with the device. 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising identifying a player who is associated with the personal electronic device. 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising associating the identified player with the personal electronic device via the unique identifier. 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising associating each of a plurality of personal electronic devices with a different single player. 6. A method of providing a bonus game on a personal electronic device in association with an electronic gaming machine that includes a video poker game, the method comprising: linking the electronic gaming machine to a personal electronic device having a location sensor via an electronic communication channel; informing the player on a display device of the personal electronic device, of bonus awards for which the player may qualify if the player discards certain cards during the video poker game played by the player on the electronic gaming machine; receiving a physical item at the electronic gaming machine from the player via at least one of a bill acceptor, a ticket acceptor, and a coin acceptor operatively connected to the video poker game in order to establish a credit balance for placing wagers on the video poker game; receiving a wager on the video poker game at the electronic gaming machine from the credit balance in response to a player input to the electronic gaming machine; monitoring cards dealt during a video poker game played by the player on the electronic gaming machine; monitoring cards discarded by the player during the video poker game played by the player on the electronic gaming machine; monitoring replacement cards dealt to replace the discarded cards on the electronic gaming machine, creating a final hand; displaying on the electronic gaming machine the final hand, wherein at least one predefined card combination results in an award to the player based on a paytable; determining the physical location of the personal electronic device via the location sensor; communicating information regarding the dealt and discarded cards to the personal electronic device via the communication channel; displaying the status of the dealt and discarded cards on the display device on the personal electronic device only if the determined physical location is a qualifying physical location; determining if the cards discarded by the player qualify the player for the bonus award, wherein the bonus award is an improvement to the paytable; if so, notifying the player of the bonus award on the display device of the personal electronic device only if the determined physical location is a qualifying physical location; paying out any award by crediting the credit balance; and receiving an input via a cashout button, which initiates a payout from the credit balance. 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising identifying the personal electronic device via a unique identifier associated with the device. 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising identifying a player who is associated with the personal electronic device. 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising associating the player with the personal electronic device via the unique identifier. 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising associating each of a plurality of personal electronic devices with a different single player.
