Disclosed are compounds and methods of making said compounds comprising a zinc oxide molecule chemically bound to one or more molecules having an acidic hydrogen, such as an organic acid. The invention also provides compositions comprising such compounds and methods of preparing such compounds. The compounds of the invention may be provided in, for example, topical skin formulations, pharmaceutical compositions, or delivery systems for active ingredients.

The invention claimed is: 1. A salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex having the formula of: wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, R 2 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, and at least one of R 1 and R 2 is a zinc oxide complex. 2. The salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 1 , wherein the salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex is in crystal form. 3. The salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 1 , wherein the salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex is comprised in a topical skin composition. 4. The salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 3 , wherein the topical skin composition is a cream, lotion, or gel. 5. The salicylic acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 3 , wherein the topical skin composition is an emulsion. 6. An alpha-hydroxy acid/zinc oxide complex having the formula of: wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, R 2 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, R 3 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, and R 4 is hydrogen or a zinc oxide complex, and at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is a zinc oxide complex. 7. The alpha-hydroxy acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 6 , wherein the alpha-hydroxy acid/zinc oxide complex is a lactic acid/zinc oxide complex having the formula of: 8. The alpha-hydroxy acid/zinc oxide complex of claim 6 , wherein the alpha-hydroxy acid/zinc-oxide complex is a glycolic acid/zinc-oxide complex having the formula of: 9.
