Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A staple cartridge, or fastener cartridge, for a surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, wherein the staple cartridge includes a distally-located cutting blade arranged to cut a distal end portion of a layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator and/or a buttress material, for example, attached to the staple cartridge. The distally-located cutting blade can extend out of a distal cavity of the staple cartridge. The distally-located cutting blade can move in a direction that is perpendicular to a staple deck of the staple cartridge. The distally-located cutting blade can also move in any suitable direction relative to the staple deck.

What is claimed is: 1. An end effector for a surgical stapler, said end effector comprising: a first jaw member, wherein said first jaw member includes a proximal end and a distal end; a staple cartridge arranged relative to said first jaw member, wherein said staple cartridge comprises: a nose portion arranged relative to said distal end of said first jaw member; and a longitudinal slot configured to receive a tissue-cuffing knife; a layer arranged relative to said staple cartridge, wherein said layer includes a body and a distal end portion extending from said body, and wherein said distal end portion of said layer is releasably engaged with said nose portion of said staple cartridge; a cutting member distinct from the tissue-cutting knife, wherein said cutting member is arranged relative to said nose portion of said staple cartridge, and wherein said cutting member is movable between a first position and a second position to cut said layer proximal to said distal end portion such that said body of said layer disengages from said nose portion; and a firing member configured to engage said cutting member such that said cutting member moves between said first position and said second position. 2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said firing member is movable between said proximal end of said first jaw member and said distal end of said first jaw member to move said cutting member from said first position to said second position. 3. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said nose portion of said staple cartridge comprises a lip configured to retain said distal end portion of said layer, wherein said lip defines a gap, wherein said distal end portion of said layer defines a layer thickness, and wherein said layer thickness is greater than said gap. 4. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said nose portion of said staple cartridge comprises a post, and wherein said distal end portion of said layer defines an aperture that receives said post. 5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staple cavities, and wherein said end effector further comprises a plurality of staples positioned within said staple cavities. 6. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said firing member comprises at least one of a staple driver and the tissue-cutting knife. 7. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge defines a channel therethrough, and wherein said channel is configured to receive said firing member. 8. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge defines a cutting member cavity, wherein said cutting member is positioned within said cutting member cavity when in said first position, and wherein said cutting member at least partially protrudes from said cutting member cavity when in said second position. 9. A staple cartridge for use in a surgical stapler, the surgical stapler including a first jaw member that has a proximal end and a distal end, the surgical stapler including a firing member comprising a tissue-cutting knife, wherein the firing member is configured to move along the first jaw member between the proximal end and the distal end, said staple cartridge comprising: a cartridge body, wherein said cartridge body is configured to operably engage the first jaw member of the surgical stapler, wherein said cartridge body comprises a staple deck and a nose portion, wherein said cartridge body defines a channel therethrough, wherein said staple deck includes a slot in communication ion with said channel, and wherein said channel is configured to receive the firing member of the surgical stapler when said cartridge body is engaged with the first jaw member of the surgical stapler; a layer arranged relative to said staple deck, wherein said layer includes a body and a distal end portion extending from said body, and wherein said distal end portion of said layer is releasably engaged with said nose portion of said staple cartridge; and a cutting member distinct from the tissue-cutting knife, wherein said cutting member is arranged relative to said nose portion of said staple cartridge, and wherein said cutting member is movable between a first position and a second position to cut said layer proximal to said distal end portion such that said body of said layer disengages from said nose portion when the firing member of the surgical stapler moves between the proximal end of the first jaw member and the distal end of the first jaw member. 10. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said nose portion of said staple cartridge comprises a lip configured to retain said distal end portion of said layer, wherein said lip defines a gap, wherein said distal end portion of said layer defines a layer thickness, and wherein said layer thickness is greater than said gap. 11. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said nose portion of said staple cartridge comprises a post, and wherein said distal end portion of said layer defines an aperture that receives said post. 12. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staple cavities, and wherein said staple cartridge further comprises a plurality of staples positioned within said staple cavities. 13. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the firing member includes at least one of a staple driver and the tissue-cutting knife. 14. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said staple cartridge defines a channel therethrough, and wherein said channel is configured to receive the firing member. 15. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said staple cartridge defines a cutting member cavity, wherein said cutting member is positioned within said cutting member cavity when in said first position, and wherein said cutting member at least partially protrudes from said cutting member cavity when in said second position. 16. A fastener cartridge, comprising: a cartridge body comprising a deck and a longitudinal slot defined in said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive a tissue-cutting knife; a plurality of fasteners at least partially positioned within said cartridge body; a firing member configured to be moved along a firing path to move each said fastener between an unfired position and a fired position; a layer positioned over said deck; and a cutting member distinct from the tissue-cutting knife and movable between a first position and a second position in a transverse direction to cut said layer, wherein said transverse direction is transverse to said firing path. 17. The fastener cartridge of claim 16 wherein said firing member is configured to move said cutting member between said first position and said second position. 18. The fastener cartridge of claim 17 , wherein said firing path defines a first end and a second end, wherein said firing path begins at said first end and ends at said second end, and wherein said cutting member is positioned at said second end. 19. The fastener cartridge of claim 16 , wherein said layer comprises a tissue thickness compensator mounted to said cartridge body at said second end. 20.
