Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In some embodiments a method comprises disposing an implant into contact with a first bone portion and into contact with a second bone portion, the implant having (1) a first interface configured to receive a restraining member, and (2) a second interface. The method further comprises inserting a portion of the fastener member into the first interface. The method further comprises securing the fastener member such that the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fixed to each other, at least in part by a substance after the securing, at least a portion of the substance disposed through the second interface.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: disposing a substance in a plurality of substance apertures of an implant, the implant comprising an interface configured to receive a fastener member and wherein the plurality of substance apertures are through holes in the implant; disposing the implant in between a first bone portion and a second bone portion, such that a first side of the implant is adjacent the first bone portion and a second side of the implant is adjacent the second bone portion; inserting, after the disposing, a portion of the fastener member into the interface; and securing, after the inserting, the fastener member such that the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fused to each other after the securing. 2. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising: securing the fastener member such that the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fused to each other, at least in part by the substance after the securing, at least a portion of the substance disposed through the substance apertures. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substance is bone graft, the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fused to each other such that the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fused to each other via the bone graft. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fastener member is a flexible fastening band. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a face configured to substantially compliment a shape of the bone portion. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fastener member comprises the portion and a distal end portion, wherein securing the fastener member comprises inserting the portion into the distal end portion. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fastener member comprises the portion comprising gears and a distal end portion comprising a ratchet, wherein securing the fastener member comprises engaging the gears with the ratchet. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant further comprises at least one projection configured to engage the first bone portion or the second bone portion. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one projection is a ridge that extends from about the center toward an outer edge of the implant. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of substance apertures are disposed encircling the interface. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of substance apertures are generally trapezoidal shaped holes surrounding the interface. 12. A method, comprising: disposing a substance in a plurality of substance apertures of an implant, the implant comprising an interface configured to receive a fastener member and wherein the plurality of substance apertures are through holes in the implant; disposing the implant in between a first bone portion and a second bone portion, such that a first side of the implant is adjacent the first bone portion and a second side of the implant is adjacent the second bone portion; disposing a proximal end portion of the fastener member though the interface, wherein the fastener member comprises the proximal end portion and a distal end portion, inserting the proximal end portion into the distal end portion after disposing the proximal end portion of the fastener member through the interface. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of disposing an implant in between a first bone portion and a second bone portion comprises disposing the implant in between a first vertebra and a second vertebra. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of disposing an implant in between a first bone portion and a second bone portion comprises disposing the implant within a joint capsule of a facet joint. 15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the fastener member is a flexible fastening band. 16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the distal end portion comprises a fastener, and wherein inserting the proximal end portion into the distal end portion comprises inserting the proximal end portion into the fastener. 17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the proximal end portion comprises gears and the distal end portion comprises a ratchet, wherein inserting the proximal end portion into the distal end portion comprises engaging the gears with the ratchet. 18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first bone portion and a second bone portion are fused to each other via the substance. 19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the implant further comprises at least one projection configured to engage the first bone portion or the second bone portion. 20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of substance apertures are disposed encircling the interface. 21. A method, comprising: disposing a substance in a plurality of substance apertures of an implant, the implant comprising an interface configured to receive a fastener member and wherein the plurality of substance apertures are through holes in the implant; disposing the implant in between a first bone portion and a second bone portion, such that a first side of the implant is adjacent the first bone portion and a second side of the implant is adjacent the second bone portion; disposing a proximal end portion of the fastener member though a lumen in the first bone portion, wherein the fastener member comprises the proximal end portion and a distal end portion, securing the fastener member. 22. The method of claim 21 , wherein securing the fastener member comprises inserting the proximal end portion into the distal end portion. 23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the fastener member is a flexible fastening band. 24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the distal end portion comprises a fastener, and wherein securing the fastener member comprises inserting the proximal end portion into the fastener. 25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the proximal end portion comprises gears and the distal end portion comprises a ratchet, wherein securing the fastener member comprises engaging the gears with the ratchet. 26. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first bone portion and the second bone portion are fused to each other via the substance. 27. The method of claim 21 , wherein the implant further comprises at least one projection configured to engage the first bone portion or the second bone portion. 28. The method of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of substance apertures are disposed encircling the interface.
