An orthotic device includes a frame having a first shell defining front and rear surfaces, and extending longitudinally into the anterior and posterior sides of the brace. A tightening mechanism is mounted onto the first shell, and has a ratchet strap located along the rear surface of the first shell and a ratchet device mounted on the front surface of the first shell. An elongate tensioning device having a first end portion is connected to the ratchet strap.

The invention claimed is: 1. An orthotic device comprising: a frame element having front and rear surfaces, the frame element defining an opening extending therethrough; a tightening mechanism having an elongate tensioning element extending in part along the rear surface of the frame element and through the opening, and a ratchet device mounted on the front surface of the frame element and engaging a first end of the tensioning element; wherein a second end of the tensioning element secures to the frame element; further comprising a dosage meter cooperating with the tightening mechanism and having an indication feature representing a tension level of the tensioning element. 2. The orthotic device according to claim 1 , wherein the tensioning element includes a cable. 3. The orthotic device according to claim 1 , wherein the tensioning element includes a substantially inelastic strap. 4. An orthotic device comprising: a frame element having front and rear surfaces, the frame element defining an opening extending therethrough; a tightening mechanism having an elongate tensioning element extending in part along the rear surface of the frame element and through the opening, and a ratchet device mounted on the front surface of the frame element and engaging a first end of the tensioning element; wherein a second end of the tensioning element secures to the frame element; wherein the ratchet device is a rotary ratchet and the tensioning element includes a cable having a first end secured to the rotary ratchet, the rotary ratchet arranged with a spool for incrementally winding the cable. 5. The orthotic device according to claim 1 , wherein a covering connects to the frame element and conceals at least part of the tensioning element. 6. The orthotic device according to claim 1 , wherein at least one guide is mounted on the frame element and directs a path of the tensioning element. 7. An orthotic device comprising: a frame element having front and rear surfaces, the frame element defining an opening extending therethrough; a tightening mechanism having an elongate tensioning element extending in part along the rear surface of the frame element and through the opening, and a ratchet device mounted on the front surface of the frame element and engaging a first end of the tensioning element; wherein a second end of the tensioning element secures to the frame element; wherein the frame element comprises first and second shells, the tightening mechanism securing to the first shell and the second shell being spaced from and connected to the first shell via an articulating strut. 8. The orthotic device according to claim 7 , wherein the second end of the tensioning element secures to the second shell. 9. The orthotic device according to claim 1 , wherein a first end portion of the tensioning element slides along the frame element thereby urging the frame element to bend. 10. An orthotic device comprising: a first frame member having front and rear surfaces; a second frame member having front and rear surfaces, the first and second frame members spaced apart by a distance; a tightening mechanism having an elongate tensioning element extending in part along the first frame member, and a ratchet device mounted on the front surface of the first frame member and engaging a first end of the tensioning element, a second end of the tensioning element connecting to the second frame member; at least one guide is mounted on the first frame member and directs a path of the tensioning element along a surface thereof; further comprising a dosage meter cooperating with the tightening mechanism and having an indication feature representing a tension level of the tensioning element. 11. The orthotic device according to claim 10 , wherein the tensioning element includes a cable. 12. The orthotic device according to claim 10 , wherein the tensioning element includes a substantially inelastic strap. 13. The orthotic device according to claim 10 , wherein the ratchet device is a rotary ratchet and the tensioning element includes a cable having a first end secured to the rotary ratchet, the rotary ratchet arranged with a spool for incrementally winding the cable. 14. The orthotic device according to claim 10 , wherein a first end portion of the tensioning element slides along the first frame member thereby urging the first frame member to bend. 15. The orthotic device according to claim 10 , wherein a covering connects to at least one of the first and second frame members and conceals at least part of the tensioning element.
