According to one example, there is provided a printing system. The printing system comprises a support having a plurality of spaced apertures and a color sensor moveable to measure light from each aperture. The printing system further comprises a controller to control the color sensor to measure characteristics of light emitted through each aperture, and to determine, for each aperture, light calibration data. The printing system is particularly adapted for use with substrates that are intended to be viewed when backlit, that is in conjunction with backlighting.

The invention claimed is: 1. A printing system comprising: a support having a plurality of spaced apertures; a color sensor moveable to measure light from each aperture; and a controller to: control the color sensor to measure characteristics of light emitted through each aperture; determine, for each aperture, light calibration data; and determine, based on the determined calibrated light characteristic data, printing system color calibration data to compensate for variations of the light across the apertures so that when printed on a substrate and backlit by the light the image appears correctly. 2. The printing system of claim 1 , further comprising: a plurality of individual light sources, wherein each individual light source is located below an associated aperture such that, when illuminated, light from each light source is emitted through the associated aperture. 3. The printing system of claim 1 , further comprising: a single light source located below the support such that, when illuminated, light emitted from the light source is emitted through each of the apertures. 4. The printing system of claim 1 , further comprising: a printing engine to print on a substrate; a substrate advance mechanism; wherein the controller is further configured to: control the printing system to print, using the print engine, a predetermined set of color patches on a substrate intended to be viewed using backlighting, each printed color patch being alignable with an aperture; control the substrate advance mechanism to position the substrate such that at least some of the printed color patches are located above a corresponding aperture; control the color sensor to measure characteristics of light emitted through an aperture and corresponding color patch; and to determine, using the previously determined light calibration data for the aperture, calibrated color patch light characteristic data. 5. The printing system of claim 4 wherein the color sensor is mounted on a carriage moveable along the support. 6. The printing system of claim 5 , wherein the printing engine further comprises an inkjet printhead, and wherein the printhead and color sensor are mounted on the same carriage. 7. The printing system of claim 5 , wherein the printing engine is configured to print with N colored inks, and wherein the controller is configured to print one set of color patches for each of the N colored inks. 8. The printing system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to determine calibrated color patch light characteristic data for each of the rows of printed color patches. 9. The printing system of claim 1 , further comprising feeding the determined calibrated light characteristic data to a closed loop color calibration system. 10. A method of operating a printing system including a substrate support having a plurality of apertures through which light may be emitted, the method comprising: measuring light characteristics of light emitted from each of the apertures; determining, from the measured light characteristics, aperture calibration data; printing a set of color patches on a substrate intended to be viewed using backlighting; positioning the substrate such that each printed color patch is positioned above a corresponding aperture; measuring color patch light characteristics of light emitted through each color patch; and applying the determined aperture calibration data to the measured color patch light characteristics to determine calibrated color patch light characteristics. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of determining aperture calibration data comprises comparing the measured light characteristics of light emitted through an aperture with a set of predetermined light characteristics. 12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: illuminating a light source situated below an aperture; measuring light characteristics only after the expiry of a predetermined time delay to allow characteristics of the light source to stabilise. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of printing prints one row of color patches for each single color ink in the printing system, and further wherein the step of determining calibrated color patch light characteristics is performed for each row of printed color patches. 14. A printing system comprising: a support having a plurality of spaced apertures; a color sensor moveable to measure light from each aperture; a printing engine to print on a substrate; a substrate advance mechanism; and a controller to: control the color sensor to measure characteristics of light emitted through each aperture; determine, for each aperture, light calibration data; control the printing system to print, using the print engine, a predetermined set of color patches on a substrate intended to be viewed using backlighting, each printed color patch being alignable with an aperture; control the substrate advance mechanism to position the substrate such that at least some of the printed color patches are located above a corresponding aperture; control the color sensor to measure characteristics of light emitted through an aperture and corresponding color patch; and to determine, using the previously determined light calibration data for the aperture, calibrated color patch light characteristic data. 15. The printing system of claim 14 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine, based on the determined calibrated light characteristic data, printing system color calibration data. 16. The printing system of claim 14 , wherein the color sensor is mounted on a carriage moveable along the support. 17.
