Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of applying graphics to a set of articles with a graphic transfer assembly is disclosed. The method includes a step of selecting an article from a set of articles comprising different types of articles. After selecting a last that may be associated with the article, the last may be attached to a last assembly of the graphic transfer assembly. With the article attached to the graphic transfer assembly, a deformable membrane may apply graphics to curved portions of the article. A protective member can be used to protect a portion of the article during the graphic transfer process.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A kit of parts, comprising: a protective member configured to cover a first portion of an article; a graphic transfer assembly, the graphic transfer assembly further comprising: a base portion configured to support the graphic transfer assembly; a first moveable portion including a first deformable membrane and a second moveable portion including a second deformable membrane; a last assembly configured to attach a last to the base portion; an actuator configured to control the first moveable portion and the second moveable portion; and wherein the first deformable membrane and the second deformable membrane are configured to conform to a curved portion of the article and thereby transfer a graphic to the curved portion. 2. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the protective member has a low thermal conductivity. 3. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the protective member is shaped to receive the first portion of the article. 4. The kit of parts according to claim 3 , wherein the article is an article of footwear including a sole; and wherein the protective member is shaped to receive the sole. 5. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the protective member is configured to protect the first portion of the article from heat generated by the graphic transfer assembly. 6. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the protective member is disposed between the first portion of the article and the first deformable membrane. 7. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the article is an article of footwear, the article of footwear comprising an upper and a sole. 8. The kit of parts according to claim 7 , wherein the curved portion of the article is associated with the upper; and wherein the first portion of the article is associated with the sole. 9. The kit of parts according to claim 7 , wherein the protective member covers a substantial entirety of the sole of the article. 10. The kit of parts according to claim 1 , wherein the protective member is configured to prevent the first deformable membrane and the second deformable membrane from contacting the first portion of the article covered by the protective member. 11. A kit of parts, comprising: an article; a graphic, the graphic configured to be associated with a curved surface on a first portion of the article; a protective member, the protective member configured to cover a second portion of the article, the second portion of the article being different than the first portion; and a graphic transfer assembly, the graphic transfer assembly further comprising: a base portion configured to support the graphic transfer assembly; a first moveable portion including a first deformable membrane and a second moveable portion including a second deformable membrane; a last assembly configured to attach a last to the base portion; an actuator configured to control the first moveable portion and the second moveable portion; and wherein the first deformable membrane and the second deformable membrane are configured to contact (a) the first portion of the article including the curved surface, and (b) the protective member applied onto the second portion of the article to thereby transfer the graphic to the curved surface of the article. 12. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the protective member has a low thermal conductivity. 13. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the protective member has a shape that corresponds to the shape of the second portion of the article. 14. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the article is an article of footwear including a sole; and wherein the protective member is shaped to receive the sole. 15. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the protective member is configured to cover the second portion of the article when the article is disposed on the last. 16. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the article is an article of footwear, the article of footwear comprising an upper and a sole. 17. The kit of parts according to claim 16 , wherein the first portion of the article including the curved surface is associated with the upper; and wherein the second portion of the article is associated with the sole. 18. The kit of parts according to claim 16 , wherein the protective member covers a substantial entirety of the sole of the article. 19. The kit of parts according to claim 16 , wherein the graphic comprises at least two graphics associated with the upper of the article. 20. The kit of parts according to claim 11 , wherein the protective member is configured to prevent the first deformable membrane and the second deformable membrane from contacting the second portion of the article covered by the protective member.
