Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A bone fixation assembly can include a suture button, a bone plate, and a suture assembly. The suture button can include a body that has a first end surface, a second end surface, and a circumferential outer surface. A first pair of passages can be formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface. The circumferential outer surface can include at least one protrusion or retaining rib extending radially therefrom. The bone plate defines an aperture. The suture button is configured to be at least partially received into the aperture in an assembled position such that the retaining rib engages the bone plate and inhibits withdrawal of the suture button from the aperture in the assembled position. The suture assembly includes a suture engaging member and a suture configured to couple the suture engaging member in the suture button.

What is claimed is: 1. A bone fixation system comprising: a suture button having a body that includes a first end surface, a second end surface, a circumferential outer surface, and a first pair of passages formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface, the circumferential outer surface including at least one protrusion extending radially therefrom; a bone plate that defines an aperture configured to at least partially receive the suture button and to engage the at least one protrusion; a suture engaging member including an elongated member having a flexible tube defining a passage therethrough, the elongated member configured to expand and engage a bone; and a suture configured to be looped through the passage in the suture engaging member and to couple the suture engaging member and the suture button. 2. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the suture button further defines a second pair of passages formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface. 3. The bone fixation system of claim 2 , wherein the body defines a pair of radial openings that connect the second pair of passages, respectively with the circumferential outer surface. 4. The bone fixation system of claim 2 , wherein the body further defines a central passage, the first pair and the second pair of passages located radially outwardly on the body relative to the central passage. 5. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the body has an upper portion that has a first diameter and a lower portion that has a second diameter, wherein the first diameter is larger than the second diameter and the at least one protrusion is formed on the lower portion. 6. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein each passage of the first pair of passages defines a passage axis, the passage axes tapering toward each other from the first end surface to the second end surface. 7. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein a lower portion of the body is configured to be received into the aperture of the bone plate and an upper portion of the body is configured to extend proud from the bone plate in an assembled configuration. 8. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein each passage of the first pair of passages is further defined by a chamfer surface that connects the first end surface with a sidewall of the passage. 9. The bone fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the aperture comprises a threaded portion and the at least one protrusion comprises a first retaining rib and a second retaining rib, disposed at least partially below the first retaining rib, the first and second retaining ribs configured to engage the threaded portion. 10. A bone fixation system comprising: a suture button having a body that includes a first end surface, a second end surface, a circumferential outer surface, a central passage formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface, and a first pair of passages formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface, the first pair of passages located radially outwardly relative to the central passage, the circumferential outer surface including at least two pairs of discontinuous retaining ribs extending radially therefrom; and a bone plate defining a plurality of threaded apertures, the suture button configured to be at least partially received into a select one of the plurality of threaded apertures in an assembled configuration, wherein the at least two pairs of discontinuous retaining ribs are configured to engage the threads of the select one of the plurality of threaded apertures and inhibit withdrawal of the suture button from the select one of the plurality of threaded apertures in the assembled configuration. 11. The bone fixation system of claim 10 , wherein the suture button further defines a second pair of passages formed through the body from the first end surface to the second end surface. 12. The bone fixation system of claim 10 , wherein the body defines a pair of radial openings that connect the second pair of passages, respectively with the circumferential outer surface. 13. The bone fixation system of claim 10 , wherein the body has an upper portion that has a first diameter and a lower portion that has a second diameter, wherein the first diameter is larger than the second diameter and at least one pair of the at least two pairs of retaining ribs is formed on the lower portion. 14. The bone fixation system of claim 10 , wherein the first pair of passages taper toward each other from the first end surface to the second end surface. 15. The bone fixation system of claim 10 , wherein a lower portion of the body is configured to be received into the select one of the plurality of threaded apertures and an upper portion of the body is configured to extend proud from an outer surface of the bone plate in an assembled configuration. 16. A bone fixation system comprising: a suture button having a body that includes a first end surface, a second end surface, a circumferential outer surface, and a first pair of passages formed through the body, each passage of the first pair of passages defining a passage axis, the passage axes extending toward each other from the first end surface to the second end surface, the circumferential outer surface including at least one protrusion extending radially therefrom; a bone plate that defines an aperture configured to be at least partially receive the at least one protrusion; a suture engaging member; and a suture configured to couple the suture engaging member and the suture button. 17. The bone fixation system of claim 16 , wherein the body defines a wall, extending from the first end surface to the second end surface, the wall separating each passage of the first pair of passages. 18. The bone fixation system of claim 16 , wherein the aperture comprises a threaded portion configured to engage the at least one protrusion. 19. The bone fixation system of claim 16 , wherein the suture button further defines a second pair of passages formed through the body and extending from the first end surface to the second end surface. 20. The bone fixation system of claim 16 , wherein each passage of the first pair of passages is further defined by a chamfer surface that connects the first end surface with a sidewall of the passage.
