Several methods are provided for communicating emergency call capability information between a station and an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network. The methods include advertising by the AP of its emergency call capabilities and announcing by the station of its emergency call capabilities. The AP can advertise its emergency call capabilities in a beacon frame, a probe response frame, a reassociation response frame, or a reauthentication response frame. The station can announce its emergency call capabilities in an association request frame, a reassociation request frame, an authentication request frame, or a reauthentication request frame.

What is claimed is: 1. An access point (AP) comprising: a processor configured to generate an emergency basic service set identity (BSSID) for an emergency call to an emergency call center, wherein the emergency BSSID is associated with an emergency call security credential; a transmitter configured to transmit a plurality of BSSIDs, wherein at least one of the plurality of BSSIDs is the emergency BSSID; and a receiver configured to receive an access request indicating the emergency BSSID from a station (STA); wherein the processor is further configured to grant emergency call access to the STA based on the emergency call security credential. 2. The AP of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of BSSIDs are transmitted in a beacon frame. 3. The AP of claim 1 , wherein the emergency BSSID is transmitted to the STA in a response frame. 4. The AP of claim 3 , wherein the response frame is a probe response frame, an association response frame, or a reassociation response frame. 5. The AP of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit an indication regarding an emergency call capability of the AP. 6. The AP of claim 5 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit an indication regarding the emergency call capability of the AP being active. 7. The AP of claim 5 , wherein the indication regarding the emergency call capability of the AP is transmitted in an extended AP capability information element (IE). 8. The AP of claim 7 , wherein the AP capability IE is greater than two bits in length. 9. A method for use in an access point (AP), the method comprising: transmitting a first frame that contains a first security credential for associating with a first type of network; transmitting a second frame that contains an emergency call security credential for associating with a second type of network; receiving, from a station (STA), an association message that includes the first security credential or the emergency call security credential; granting the STA access to the first type of network on a condition that the received association message includes the first security credential, and granting access to the second type of network on a condition that the received association message includes the emergency call security credential, wherein access to the second type of network is for an emergency call. 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising: transmitting an indication regarding an emergency call capability of the AP being active. 11. The method of claim 9 further comprising: transmitting an indication regarding an emergency call capability of the AP. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the indication regarding the emergency call capability of the AP is transmitted in an AP capability information element (IE). 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the AP capability IE is greater than two bits in length. 14. An access point (AP) comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit: a first frame that contains a security credential for associating with a first type of network, a second frame that contains an emergency call security credential for associating with a second type of network, a receiver configured to receive, from a station (STA), an association message that includes the first security credential or the emergency call security credential; and a processor configured to: grant the STA access to the first type of network on a condition that the received association message includes the first security credential, and grant access to the second type of network on a condition that the received association message includes the emergency call security credential, wherein access to the second type of network is for an emergency call. 15. The AP of claim 14 , wherein the transmitter further configured to transmit an indication regarding an emergency call capability of the AP being active. 16. The AP of claim 14 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit an indication regarding an emergency call capability of the AP. 17. The AP of claim 16 , wherein the indication regarding the emergency call capability of the AP is transmitted in an AP capability information element (IE). 18. The AP of claim 17 , wherein the AP capability IE is greater than two bits in length.
