Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of authenticating a user of a computing device is proposed, together with computing device on which the method is implemented. In the method a modified base image is overlaid with a modified overlay image on a display and at least one of the modified base image and modified overlay image is moved by the user. Positive authentication is indicated in response to the base image reference point on the modified base image being aligned with the overlay image reference point on the modified overlay image and selection of a color for a portion of the display that matches a pre-selected color.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of controlling access to an electronic device, the method comprising: generating a modified first image from a first image, wherein the first image and the modified first image include a first reference portion; generating a modified second image from a second image, wherein the second image and the modified second image include a second reference portion; displaying, on a display of the electronic device, the modified first image overlaid by the modified second image; automatically changing the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image; and authenticating access to the electronic device in response to substantial alignment of the first reference portion in the modified first image with the second reference portion in the modified second image and in response to receiving input selecting a color for the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image which matches a designated color. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the modified first image comprises changing a position of the first reference portion, and generating the modified second image comprises changing a position of the second reference portion. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the modified first image comprises changing the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the modified second image comprises changing the color of the second reference portion of the modified second image. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first image is a photographic or abstract image having a number of spaced apart objects and the first reference portion is an object in the image, and wherein the second image is a grid of numbers, characters or objects. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the input selecting a color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image is the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion when designated input is received. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the designated input is touch input detected by a touchscreen of the electronic device or depression of a key of a keyboard of the electronic device. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image stops changing after receiving input selecting a color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image continues changing after receiving input selecting a color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: changing the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image in response to received input. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: moving one of the modified first image and the modified second image in response to received input. 12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing an indication of successful authentication in response to the authenticating. 13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing an indication of failed authentication in response to the authenticating. 14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: locking the electronic device after a threshold number of failed authentications. 15. An electronic device, comprising: a processor; a display coupled to the processor; a memory coupled to the processor storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: generate a modified first image from a first image, wherein the first image and the modified first image include a first reference portion; generate a modified second image from a second image, wherein the second image and the modified second image include a second reference portion; display, on a display of the electronic device, the modified first image overlaid by the modified second image; automatically change the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image; and authenticate access to the electronic device in response to substantial alignment of the first reference portion in the modified first image with the second reference portion in the modified second image and in response to receiving input selecting a color for the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image which matches a designated color. 16. The electronic device of claim 15 , wherein generating the modified first image comprising randomly altering a position of the first reference portion, and generating the modified second image comprising randomly altering a position of the second reference portion. 17. The electronic device of claim 15 , wherein the first image is a photographic or abstract image having a number of spaced apart objects and the first reference portion is an object in the image, and wherein the second image is a grid of numbers, characters or objects. 18. A non-transitory machine readable medium having tangibly stored thereon executable instructions that, when executed by a processor of an electronic device, cause the electronic device: generate a modified first image from a first image, wherein the first image and the modified first image include a first reference portion; generate a modified second image from a second image, wherein the second image and the modified second image include a second reference portion; display, on a display of the electronic device, the modified first image overlaid by the modified second image; automatically change the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image; and authenticate access to the electronic device in response to substantial alignment of the first reference portion in the modified first image with the second reference portion in the modified second image and in response to receiving input selecting a color for the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image which matches a designated color. 19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image stops changing after receiving input selecting a color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image. 20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image continues changing after receiving input selecting a color of the first reference portion of the modified first image or the second reference portion of the modified second image.
