What is claimed is: 1. A method of inhibiting apoptosis signaling-regulating kinase 1 comprising contacting an apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 with a composition comprising a compound of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a pharmaceutical composition comprising one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered to a patient. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered orally. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered orally in tablets. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered in a single dosage. 7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered in multiple dosages. 8. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered alone. 9. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered in combination with one or more therapeutic agents. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more therapeutic agents are selected from the group consisting of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, antihypertensive agents, antibiotic agents, analgesic agents, antidepressant agents, or antianxiety agents. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition and the one or more therapeutic agents are administered simultaneously. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition and the one or more therapeutic agents are administered one after the other within intervals.
