A multi-part surgical staple assembly is provided to provide uniform compression across stapled tissues. The staple assembly generally includes a U-shaped staple, a staple plate positionable against a backspan of the staple for engagement with one side of a stapled tissue section and a platen for receipt of tissue penetrating tips of the staple and engageable with an opposite side of a stapled tissue section. The staple plate and platen are provided with holes to receive the legs of the staple. In one embodiment, the staple plate is provided with a biasing member to bias the staple plate away from the backspan of the staple and toward the stapled tissue.

What is claimed is: 1. An anvil and a compression member assembly comprising: a compression member including first and second ends and first and second edges; and an anvil including, a plate having a first staple clinching pocket and a second staple clinching pocket positioned adjacent to the first staple clinching pocket; and first and second recesses formed in the plate, each of the first and second recesses extending outwardly from a respective one of the first and second staple clinching pockets, the first and second recesses being configured to receive a respective one of the first and second ends of the compression member, wherein the compression member is received entirely within the first and second staple clinching pockets and the first and second recesses of the plate and the first and second edges of the compression member are positioned to be engaged by penetrating tips of a staple to force the compression member from within the first and second staple clinching pockets and the first and second recesses. 2. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first recess is formed adjacent the first staple clinching pocket and the second recess is formed adjacent the second staple clinching pocket. 3. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first staple clinching pocket includes a first center point, the first recess includes a first recess center point, and the second staple clinching pocket includes a second center point such that the first center point, first recess center point and the second center point lie along a common axis. 4. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plate further includes a central recess intermediate the first and second staple clinching pockets, the central recess having a raised portion, such that the raised portion is positioned beneath a central opening in the compression member. 5. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first recess is formed outward of the first staple clinching pocket and the second recess is formed outward of the second staple clinching pocket. 6. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 5 , wherein the first end of the compression member is received in the first recess and the second end of the compression member is received in the second recess. 7. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first and second staple clinching pockets each include a staple forming surface extending a length of each of the first and second staple clinching pockets. 8. The anvil and the compression member assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the compression member and the plate each includes a tissue contacting surface, the tissue contacting surface of the compression member laying flush with the tissue contacting surface of the plate when the compression member is received within the plate. 9. An anvil and a compression member assembly comprising: a compression member including first and second edges; and an anvil including a plate having a first staple clinching pocket and a second staple clinching pocket positioned adjacent to the first staple clinching pocket, the compression member being frictionally received within the first and second staple clinching pockets, wherein the first and second edges of the compression member are positioned to be engaged by penetrating tips of a staple to force the compression member free from within the first and second staple clinching pockets; wherein the anvil further includes first and second recesses formed in the plate and the compression member includes first and second ends, wherein each of the first and second recesses extend outwardly from a respective one of the first and second staple clinching pockets and are configured to receive a respective one of the first and second ends of the compression member.
