The present invention relates to a new and improved synthesis of tetrahydromyrcenol (IUPAC name: 2,6-dimethyl-2-octanol).

The invention claimed is: 1. A process for production of compound of formula (I) by a reductive ring-opening of a compound of formula (II) 2. Process according to claim 1 , wherein the reducing agent is H 2 gas. 3. Process according to claim 2 , wherein process is carried out under pressure of at least 1 bar. 4. Process according to claim 1 , wherein the process is carried out at temperatures from 15-100° C. 5. Process according to claim 1 , wherein the process is carried out with or without a solvent. 6. Process according to claim 1 , wherein the process is carried out in the presence of a catalyst. 7. Process according to claim 1 , wherein the process is carried out in the presence of an acid.
