Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Media content, based on a predetermined set of constraints, from a content provider is delivered to a local cache of a user device before viewing the media. A client asset manager process resides in the user device, an asset list at the content provider site, and the media assets are located at a remote site.

We claim: 1. A method for use by a content provider for delivering a media asset to a user device over a network, the method comprising: supplying a media asset list over the network to the user device; updating the media asset list on the user device automatically based on user viewing preferences; receiving a selected media asset from the media asset list from the user device; delivering to the user device the selected media asset from the media asset list over the network for display by the user device; sending a message to the user device over the network using a callback uniform resource locator (URL) upon completing the delivery of the selected media asset; limiting a number of viewings of the selected media asset from the media asset list for the user device; and providing a key to the user device, wherein the key is for decrypting the selected media asset after completing the delivery of the selected media asset and while the user device is not connected to the network. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising: limiting a period of time during which the selected media asset from the media asset list can be viewed using the user device. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the period of time is twenty four hours. 4. A content provider for delivering a media asset to a user device over a network, the content provider comprising: a memory; and a CPU configured to: supply a media asset list over the network to the user device; update the media asset list on the user device automatically based on user viewing preferences; receive a selected media asset from the media asset list from the user device; deliver to the user device the selected media asset from the media asset list over the network for display by the user device; send a message to the user device over the network using a callback uniform resource locator (URL) upon completing the delivery of the selected media asset; limit a number of viewings of the selected media asset from the media asset list for the user device; and provide a key to the user device, wherein the key is for decrypting the selected media asset after completing the delivery of the selected media asset and while the user device is not connected to the network. 5. The content provider of claim 4 , wherein the CPU is further configured to: limit a period of time during which the selected media asset from the media asset list can be viewed using the user device. 6. The content provider of claim 5 , wherein the period of time is twenty four hours.
